The trial of Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug has been paused indefinitely in Fulton County, Georgia.
According to the Washington Examiner, Judge Ural Glanville of Fulton County deferred the case as he faces requests for recusal due to a controversial meeting with prosecutors.
The accusations against Young Thug and his co-defendants include serious charges spanning from Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) violations to murder and armed robbery in a case that has been unfolding for over two years.
Judge Glanville's decision came after a closed-door meeting that included prosecuting attorneys and a key witness but not the defense. This has sparked debates over judicial impartiality.
Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, raised concerns about this meeting, labeling it as ex parte and challenging it as a deviation from judicial norms.
In an emotional courtroom moment, as the ex parte issue was discussed, Glanville took offense at how the defense obtained knowledge of the meeting. He demanded to know Steel's source, leading to a tense exchange that ended with Steel being arrested for contempt of court.
The defense’s legal team argued that Steel’s arrest was an overreach, undermining his right to fair legal representation. Attorney Ashleigh Merchant intervened, insisting on due process for Steel.
Finally, a separate judge reviewed and granted Steel’s release, though the contempt charges remain pending. Meanwhile, the inquiry into the judge's potential recusal is transferred to a different judge who will focus on the implications of the ex parte meeting.

Key trial witness Kenneth Copeland, often referred to by his nickname ‘Lil Woody’, was at the center of this controversy. He received immunity to testify regarding a 2015 murder linked to this case.
Following the uproar, Glanville disclosed the transcript of the questioned meeting. It revealed him giving directions to Copeland, which only intensified public and legal scrutiny.
