Former NCAA woman of the year lost in tragic New York plane crash

 April 14, 2025

Tragedy struck in Copake, New York, this past Saturday.

According to Fox News, A plane crash claimed the lives of six individuals, including a celebrated former NCAA Woman of the Year.

The group was traveling from Westchester County Airport in White Plains to Columbia County Airport when their aircraft, a Mitsubishi MU-2B, crashed around 12:15 p.m. The crash site was a muddy field where the aircraft was found in a severely damaged state.

Details on the Victims and Their Journey

Authorities identified the victims as Karenna Groff, her parents Dr. Michael Groff and Dr. Joy Saini, her brother Jared Groff, his partner Alexia Couyutas Duarte, and Karenna's boyfriend James Santoro. The pilot operated the privately owned aircraft under instrument flight rules at the time of the incident, with all victims onboard.

Before the crash, complications arose. The pilot missed the approach to the airport and contacted air traffic control for new coordinates. Despite receiving the redirection, the pilot failed to respond to subsequent communications.

The aircraft, well-maintained and equipped with recently upgraded cockpit technology that met FAA standards, remained intact in the final moments before the crash, as captured on video, showing the plane descending rapidly.

Investigation May Extend Over Years

The authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are investigating the crash. Todd Inman, an NTSB official, indicated the investigation's complexity could stretch up to 24 months. He described the aircraft as "compressed, buckled, and embedded in the terrain," which complicates recovery and analysis efforts.

This incident has left the community and the victims' families in despair. The NCAA honored Karenna Groff as Woman of the Year for her exceptional achievements at MIT, particularly in soccer. People celebrated her not only for her athletic prowess but also for her academic excellence and community involvement.

John Santoro, father of victim James Santoro, expressed his grief over the loss:

The world lost a lot of very good people who were going to do a lot of good for the world if they had the opportunity. We’re all personally devastated.

As the investigation continues, authorities aim to uncover the sequence of events leading to this fatal outcome. For now, the aviation community and the families await answers that could shed light on the crash causes and potentially prevent future tragedies.

Community Reels from the Shock

This accident has resonated deeply within the local community and beyond, given the prominence and beloved nature of the individuals involved. Air traffic control's attempts to redirect the pilot, who did not respond to the low altitude warnings, add a layer of procedural scrutiny to the ongoing investigation.

The impact of this event extends into the realms of academia, medicine, and sports, touching the lives of many who knew the victims personally or through their public endeavors. The broad implications of such incidents challenge the aviation community to enhance safety and response protocols. Meanwhile, supportive messages and memories pour in, commemorating the lives lost.

The final report on this incident could potentially lead to significant changes in aviation practices, but for now, the focus remains on supporting the grieving families and honoring the memories of those lost. Their contributions to society were significant, and their absence will be felt by many.
