Former Minnesota Army Commander Criticizes Governor Tim Walz's Military Claims

 August 12, 2024

Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota and a Democratic vice presidential candidate, faces allegations concerning his past military representations.

Fox News reported that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's military career is under scrutiny after accusations surfaced regarding the authenticity of his rank claims during his service.

John Kolb, former commander of the Minnesota National Guard unit where Walz served, has rebuked him publicly. Through a Facebook post, Kolb disputed Walz’s portrayal of retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. The criticisms have placed Walz's character and truthfulness at the center of this contested issue as he campaigns on the national stage alongside Vice President Kamala Harris.

Debate Rises Over Walz's Military Title Amid Election

According to Kolb, Walz inaccurately claimed to have retired as a Command Sergeant Major, despite only briefly holding this rank and later being demoted to Master Sergeant for failing to complete the necessary educational courses. This revelation comes amidst Walz's active involvement in the 2024 election campaign, potentially impacting his bid for the vice presidency.

The Harris campaign recently modified Walz’s official biography, adjusting the description of his military career from "retired Command Sergeant Major" to having "served as a Command Sergeant Major." This subtle change of wording hints at attempts to rectify previous claims about his service record.

John Kolb stated:

I do not regret that Tim Walz retired early from the Minnesota National Guard, did not complete the Sergeant Major Academy, broke his enlistment contract, or did not complete any assignment as a Sergeant Major. It is an affront to the Noncommissioned Officer Corps that he continues to glom onto the title. I can sit in the cockpit of an airplane; it does not make me a pilot. Similarly, when the demands of service and leadership at the highest level got real, he chose another path.

Supporting Voices Amplify Claims

Adding to Kolb's allegations, Thomas Behrends, Walz's successor in the battalion, has also voiced disapproval of how Walz has used the title of Command Sergeant Major. Behrends emphasized that Walz exploited the rank to enhance his political persona, even though he did not officially earn it in the end.

Thomas Behrends, interviewed by Laura Ingraham discussed Walz's use of his military rank for political gain.

He's used the rank that he never achieved to advance his political career. I mean, he still says he's a retired Command Sergeant Major to this day, and he's not. He uses the rank of others to make it look like he's a better person than he is.

Documents and statements reveal that Walz served in the Minnesota Army National Guard until his early retirement in 2005. Just two years later, he transitioned into politics by winning a seat as a U.S. House of Representatives member from Minnesota.

Public and Media Reaction to the Controversy

This issue of "stolen valor" and misrepresented military service has stirred a mixture of media attention and voter concern as the election approaches. Critics and supporters alike are keenly observing how this controversy might affect Walz's appeal to voter blocs, particularly veterans and active military personnel.

Adding to the political uproar, Donald Trump Jr. leveraged the controversy to criticize the media's treatment of the story, suggesting a bias in ignoring these damaging allegations against Walz.

As both sides of the political spectrum weigh in, the verification of these military service claims and their implications are becoming pivotal topics in the ongoing campaign storyline.

In conclusion, Tim Walz’s military service, specifically his rank and claims about his retirement, are crucial focal points of controversy as he seeks national office. Both supporters and detractors are closely monitoring this situation, which touches on core issues of trust and integrity in a highly charged political climate. Whether these allegations will sway voter opinion remains to be seen as the 2024 elections draw near.
