A complex legal saga unfolds as FBI agent Jonathan Buma, who previously investigated Rudy Giuliani's alleged Russian connections, faces criminal charges.
Just the News reported that Buma, who was arrested at JFK Airport in March for allegedly disclosing confidential information, has hired the law firm Geragos & Geragos, which previously defended Hunter Biden.
The agent's arrest came after he allegedly absconded with approximately 130 classified files from the FBI's internal network, including sensitive information about foreign adversaries and confidential human sources.
Mark Geragos, a prominent attorney who defended Hunter Biden during his legal troubles, will now represent Buma alongside Alexandra Kazarian. The legal team previously helped Biden navigate his tax and gun charges before his December 2024 pardon.
Buma's arrest occurred as he attempted to board an international flight, despite his claims that he had properly reported his travel plans to the FBI a month prior. The agent maintains his innocence, arguing that the arrest was retaliatory.
The FBI's criminal affidavit reveals that Buma had taken numerous sensitive documents, including reports about a foreign country's weapons of mass destruction program and confidential source information.
During his FBI tenure, Buma claimed to have recruited high-level informants with access to Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs. He worked closely with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Trump-Russia collusion.
Buma repeatedly alleged that Giuliani may have been compromised by Russian intelligence services. These claims echoed themes pushed by Democrats during Trump's first impeachment over his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The agent also defended the FBI's handling of the Hunter Biden investigation, suggesting that efforts to investigate the president's son were part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
Before his arrest, Buma had been involved in scrutinizing Pavel Fuks, a Russian-Ukrainian businessman who had hired Giuliani in 2017 to attract investments to Kharkiv, Ukraine. This relationship later drew criticism from Democrats and Mueller's investigation.
According to court documents, Buma posted excerpts of his draft book online containing classified information about FBI investigations. The bureau raided his home in November 2023 but did not recover the missing documents.
In response to his situation, Buma published a statement through Change.org arguing that he was unfairly targeted for doing his job and protecting America.
Jonathan Buma, a 15-year FBI veteran who handled counterintelligence matters and managed confidential human sources, now faces criminal charges for allegedly disclosing confidential information. The arrest occurred at JFK Airport as he attempted to leave the country, leading to his case being moved to the Central District of California. While released on a $100,000 bond, Buma must remain within specific geographic boundaries and faces serious legal consequences as his case progresses through the justice system.
