A Ferguson police officer is in critical condition after being assaulted during protests on the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown's fatal shooting, Police Chief Troy Doyle said Saturday.
Fox News reported that Officer Travis Brown, who is Black, suffered a severe brain injury when a suspect charged him and knocked him to the ground, hitting his head during the fall.
The incident occurred outside the Ferguson police station when protesters began shaking and eventually broke through a fence, prompting Chief Doyle to send an arrest team that included Officer Brown.
Two other officers sustained minor injuries. One suspect has been charged with assault and other offenses, with more charges expected for others involved. Officer Brown, who joined the department in January as part of an effort to increase diversity, remains in the hospital fighting for his life.
However, the atmosphere deteriorated when some protesters broke through the fence, leading to property damage on the police precinct grounds. Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle reported that the escalation prompted the deployment of an arrest team, which included Officer Brown, to manage the situation.
Officer Travis Brown, who had joined the Ferguson Police Department earlier in January following a tenure at the St. Louis County Police Department, was one of the officers attempting to control the situation when he was violently knocked to the ground, resulting in severe brain trauma.
As the incident unfolded, Chief Doyle expressed his distress over the assault on an officer committed to impacting the community positively. He highlighted Brown's intent to be a part of the change within the Ferguson Police Department, which has notably increased the hiring of Black officers. Over half of the force is now Black, reflecting a shift towards diversity since 2014.
St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell reflected on the difficulties of dealing with such traumatic events, emphasizing the emotional toll on the families of those involved.
After the incident, immediate action was taken against the assailant, with charges including assault of a special victim, resisting arrest, and property damage. Held on a $500,000 bond, the suspect also awaits the filing of additional charges.

He’s the type of officer that we want in our community. And what happens? He gets assaulted. I had to look his mother in the eye and tell her what happened to her son. I’m never going to do that again, I promise you that.
