Well, folks, the gavel has dropped with a thunderous bang as a federal appeals court just handed President Donald Trump a hefty $1 million penalty for a lawsuit deemed utterly without merit.
In a nutshell, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, upheld a sanction against Trump and his former lawyer, Alina Habba, for pursuing a legal action against Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and a host of others over claims tied to Russian collusion, as Fox News reports.
Let’s rewind to the origins of this legal saga, which began with a lawsuit filed by Trump accusing Clinton, Comey, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), and several former FBI officials like Peter Strzok and Lisa Page of scheming to sabotage his 2016 campaign.
In that case, as many might have predicted, it didn’t survive scrutiny and was tossed out long before this latest ruling.
Back in 2023, a federal judge slapped Trump and Habba with a $1 million penalty for what was called a frivolous and bad-faith filing, a decision they promptly appealed.
Fast forward to November 26, 2025, and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals stood firm, affirming the penalty and requiring Trump and Habba to shell out roughly $938,000, divvied up among the numerous defendants named in the original suit.
Speaking of harsh, the original 2023 ruling didn’t mince words, with Judge Donald Middlebrooks declaring, “Here we are confronted with a lawsuit that should never have been filed, which was completely frivolous, both factually and legally, and which was brought in bad faith for an improper purpose.”
That’s a judicial burn if there ever was one, and it paints a picture of a legal system fed up with what it sees as courtroom antics rather than legitimate grievances.
Middlebrooks went further, stating, “Mr. Trump is a prolific and sophisticated litigant who is repeatedly using the courts to seek revenge on political adversaries.”
Now, while conservatives might argue the courts often lean left and target Trump unfairly, even sympathizers must admit that using the judiciary as a political battering ram risks undermining genuine legal battles.
Interestingly, two defendants pushed for additional sanctions on Trump’s appeal, claiming it, too, lacked merit, but the court declined to pile on more penalties.
Meanwhile, Alina Habba, now serving as U.S. attorney for New Jersey, shares the financial burden of this ruling, a reminder that legal counsel isn’t just along for the ride but equally accountable.
In a related but separate matter, just days before this decision, a federal court dismissed charges of false statements against James Comey, citing the appointment of an unqualified U.S. attorney, Lindsay Halligan, by Trump.
Judge Cameron Currie, appointed by Clinton and based in South Carolina, oversaw that case due to a conflict with Virginia judges, consolidating challenges from Comey and another individual named James over Halligan’s authority.
As for a response from Trump’s camp, Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment but received no immediate reply, leaving us to wonder if this penalty will prompt a shift in strategy or just another chapter in an ongoing legal war.
