FBI Raids Locations Linked to Oakland Mayor Amid Recall Push

 June 20, 2024

In a dramatic escalation amid political turmoil, FBI agents converged on several properties tied to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.

According to Fox News, the FBI raided a home connected to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao. The operation was linked to an ongoing investigation coinciding with efforts to recall the mayor.

In the early hours, agents appeared at a home at 80 Maiden Lane in Oakland, associated with Mayor Sheng Thao but not owned by her. Thao, celebrated as the first Oakland mayor who had been a renter, took office in November 2022.

FBI Targets Properties in Widespread Raid

The FBI targeted the mayor's associated property and raided locations connected to businessman Andy Duong and the Vietnamese American Business Association (VABA). These raids extended to 4320 View Crest Court and 1211 Embarcadero Way, linked to businesses under Duong's influence.

Duong is recognized as a part-owner of California Waste Solutions, and VABA has previously faced scrutiny over campaign contributions to Mayor Thao. This marks a significant development in what appears to be a larger investigatory effort encompassing several associated entities.

The stakes rose for Mayor Thao as the Oakland United to Recall Sheng Thao (OUST) recently succeeded in getting their recall initiative on the November ballot. The petition garnered nearly double the required signatures to qualify, underscoring the significant community pushback against the mayor.

Community and Political Reactions

Reaction to the FBI's actions was swift and charged. Seneca Scott, the lead organizer of the recall campaign, expressed his view on the unfolding events.

This is a national embarrassment. I think that she's going to have to resign and then [there will be] an interim replacement. We may have four mayors in six months. However, with the news today that the FBI raided her home, I think it's going to be an easy campaign. This is going to go very very deep. I think we're going to see a lot of things exposed in the City of Oakland.

The FBI maintained its discretion regarding the operation. "The FBI is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane," said a spokesperson for the bureau, who declined to provide further details.

Mayor Sheng Thao and her office have not yet released a statement regarding the raids. The mayor’s connection to the raid locations and the specifics of the allegations remain under wraps as federal officials continue their investigation.

Impact on Oakland's Political Landscape

The ramifications of the raids are likely to ripple through Oakland's political environment, especially with the mayorial recall looming. Residents and political commentators are watching closely as the outcomes could redefine governance in Oakland.

The raid's timing, right after the recall effort's approval for the November ballot, suggests a complex backdrop of allegations and political maneuvering. Oakland's community, already vibrant and vocal in its civic engagement, finds itself at a critical juncture.

In sum, the events in Oakland represent a confluence of investigatory action and political controversy. These developments could potentially reshape the city's leadership and impact its policy direction for years to come. Oakland stands at a pivotal point, awaiting further developments as federal investigations and political campaigns unfold.
