FBI Disrupts Florida Man's Alleged Plot Against AIPAC Offices During Hanukkah

 January 2, 2025

A Gainesville resident's journey to South Florida during the holiday season takes an alarming turn as federal authorities intervene.

According to CBS News, FBI agents thwarted a potential threat against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) offices when they arrested Forrest Pemberton, who allegedly planned to harm employees of the pro-Israel organization during the first night of Hanukkah.

Court documents reveal that Pemberton intended to conduct surveillance of AIPAC's South Florida offices on December 22 and 23, with plans to return later carrying concealed firearms. The suspect's movements were closely monitored by law enforcement, who tracked him to a hotel less than two miles from the organization's Plantation, Florida address.

Federal Agents Track Suspect's Movements Across Florida

Law enforcement maintained surveillance of Pemberton as he traveled between multiple locations. On December 25, authorities intercepted him in Tallahassee while he was traveling in a rideshare vehicle. The arrest yielded three firearms, including an AR-style rifle, along with ammunition.

During subsequent questioning on December 26, Pemberton provided insights into his motivations. When confronted about his intentions by FBI agents, he made several revealing statements about his plans.

According to the FBI affidavit, when asked about his intentions regarding a potential mass casualty event, Pemberton stated:

Um, I really don't know if I was gonna end it with my life or not. I hadn't gotten that far yet. It entirely depended if I ended up getting caught or not. If caught, that was a way out.

Investigation Reveals Suspect's Motivations and Warning Signs

Family members discovered a "goodbye" note left by Pemberton that contained anti-authority statements and expressed desires to "close the loop" and "stoke the flames." They also reported that his AR-style rifle and other firearms were missing from the residence.

The targeting of AIPAC was not random, according to prosecutors. Court documents indicate that Pemberton selected the organization due to its political influence and his personal frustrations with the current state of affairs.

AIPAC's spokesperson addressed the situation, emphasizing their commitment to their mission despite such threats:

We take these threats very seriously and we are working closely with law enforcement concerning this matter. We will not be deterred by extremists in pursuing our mission to strengthen the relationship with America's valued ally, Israel. We are deeply appreciative of the FBI's work to stop this individual.

Swift Law Enforcement Response Leads to Critical Arrest

The collaboration between multiple law enforcement agencies proved crucial in preventing potential violence. The Alachua County Sheriff's Department confirmed the FBI's role in apprehending Pemberton, while federal authorities maintained close surveillance throughout the operation.

Pemberton is currently in pretrial detention awaiting a court hearing scheduled for Monday in federal court in Gainesville. The case has drawn attention from both law enforcement and advocacy organizations concerned about threats to religious and political institutions.

Legal proceedings are moving forward, and the Justice Department is handling the prosecution. Neither Pemberton's assigned defense attorney nor FBI spokespersons have provided additional comments on the case.

Federal Investigation Yields Critical Intel on Thwarted Attack

Forrest Pemberton's alleged plan to target AIPAC's South Florida offices was disrupted by FBI agents during the first night of Hanukkah. The suspect, who was found with multiple firearms, including an AR-style rifle, faces federal stalking charges after authorities uncovered his alleged intentions to harm employees of the pro-Israel organization. The case highlights ongoing concerns about threats to advocacy organizations, with Pemberton now awaiting his court hearing in Gainesville while remaining in pretrial detention.
