Democrats and Republicans are once again clashing after new evidence surfaced involving Hunter Biden and top FBI agents. On the day the New York Post published emails from Hunter Biden’s controversial laptop, key figures inside the FBI were already talking about an active money-laundering investigation.
According to the New York Post, redacted chat logs released by Sen. Chuck Grassley point to behind-the-scenes discussions among FBI agents, who had just told social media companies the laptop story was likely disinformation. These revelations have ignited fresh accusations that the FBI deliberately shielded the Biden family from scrutiny ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
The controversy centers on October 14, 2020, when FBI agent Elvis Chan and analyst Peter Courtney discussed Hunter Biden’s laptop as a “money laundering case,” just hours after the FBI warned Twitter and Facebook about alleged Russian interference. The same day, the Post published explosive emails tying then-candidate Joe Biden to his son’s foreign business deals.
In a string of messages, FBI agent Chan asked Courtney, “Actually what kind of case is the laptop thing?” Courtney replied, “CLOSE HOLD ‐ its a money laundering case on hunter biden.” Chan responded, “oh crap. ok. it ends here.” This exchange, now public, has angered Republican lawmakers and conservative activists, who say it exposes political bias at the highest levels of law enforcement.
Earlier that day, during a meeting with Twitter executives about election interference, Courtney tried to answer questions about the authenticity of the laptop. However, an FBI lawyer immediately cut him off, stating the agency had “no further comment,” a move later referenced in congressional testimony by Laura Dehmlow, then section chief of the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force.
A half-hour later, an attorney from the FBI’s Office of the General Counsel messaged Chan, saying, “Courtney messed up… We cannot comment.” These messages, previously redacted, are now fueling accusations that the FBI actively worked to suppress the story.
Within hours of the New York Post’s publication, Twitter and Facebook censored the story, labeling it as “disinformation” and invoking policies on “hacked materials.” Critics say these decisions were directly influenced by months of FBI briefings warning of supposed Russian “hack-and-leak” operations, specifically mentioning Hunter Biden as a likely target.
Yoel Roth, who was Twitter’s head of trust and safety at the time, testified that the FBI routinely warned social media platforms about potential foreign interference in October 2020, with specific references to Hunter Biden. The FBI, which obtained the laptop in December 2019, has been accused of orchestrating a campaign to “prebunk” the story for political reasons.
Sen. Grassley and Sen. Ron Johnson, who was leading a Senate investigation into the Biden family at the time, say they were given a misleading FBI briefing in August 2020 that labeled their probe as Russian disinformation. Grassley stated, “So it’s no shock to me the FBI was apparently quietly looking into a money laundering case against Hunter Biden.”
Despite these developments, there has been little movement toward holding FBI officials accountable. Donald Trump, now back in the White House, and his ally Kash Patel, currently serving as FBI director, have faced criticism from conservative circles for not taking swifter action to address what many see as a clear abuse of power.
Miranda Devine, whose reporting helped bring the laptop story to national attention, characterized the FBI’s actions as an “election interference operation to protect Joe Biden.” She noted that, while Trump advisers Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro were jailed for defying congressional subpoenas, FBI and White House officials connected to the laptop cover-up have largely avoided consequences.
Sen. Grassley remains one of the most vocal figures demanding transparency. He called for the FBI to remove redactions from chat logs and to explain why the agency worked so closely with social media firms to suppress the story. According to Grassley, “the real scandal is the way the DOJ and FBI colluded with the media to cover for the Biden family and tried to sweep it all under the rug with a sweetheart plea deal, until Hunter Biden was ultimately pardoned.”
Sen. Grassley said:
Yet, during the same time period, the FBI provided me and [Wisconsin] Senator [Ron] Johnson a bogus briefing in August 2020 at the behest of Democrats, and later leaked its contents to the partisan media in an effort to falsely label our Biden family investigation as Russian disinformation.
The release of these chat logs has reignited debate over the FBI’s conduct and the integrity of the 2020 election. Many conservatives are calling on Congress to pursue further investigations and for the Justice Department to hold those responsible to account. The actions of agents like Elvis Chan and attorneys who blocked disclosure of the laptop’s legitimacy are certain to face continued scrutiny.
As the political divide deepens, Democrats defend the FBI, arguing there is no evidence of intentional election interference. They point to the agency’s longstanding policy of not commenting on ongoing investigations and argue that the suppression of the story was a matter of national security, not partisan politics. Meanwhile, Republicans and independent watchdogs are demanding more transparency, warning that trust in federal law enforcement is at stake.
