Ex-Classmate Describes 2024 RNC Shooter as Politically Obsessed

 July 18, 2024

Former President Donald Trump nearly became the target of an assassination attempt by Thomas Crooks during the 2024 Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee.

As reported by Breitbart News, multiple sources reveal that Thomas Crooks was highly critical of US politicians, irrespective of their party affiliations.

His discontent was broad, indicating a general disillusionment rather than a targeted political agenda.

Political Discontent Triggers Tragic Incident

Crooks' former classmate Vincent Taormina vividly remembers Crooks as someone who would aggressively challenge political opinions. Crooks often engaged in heated discussions, especially targeting those who supported politicians he disapproved of. His behavior was described as smug and arrogant, traits that were particularly prominent during debates on political subjects.

In one such interaction, Crooks challenged Taormina's support for Trump: "I brought up the fact that I’m Hispanic and, you know, I’m for Trump. And he said, ‘Well you’re Hispanic, so shouldn’t you hate Trump?'" Taormina recounted. Such exchanges underpin Crooks' confrontational nature when it comes to politics.

An Unsettling Profile Emerges from Investigations

Despite being active socially and not isolated, Crooks was part of a circle wherein threatening behavior was not unusual. His friend group in school was known for making unsettling comments about violence, heightening concerns about his subsequent actions.

Leading up to the incident, Crooks's digital footprint revealed extensive searches about political events and figures. Key searches included details related to the Republican and Democratic national conventions and specific information about Trump rallies, hinting at premeditation.

Vincent Taormina provided further insight into Crooks' mindset and motivations through a recall of past conversations:

He just did not like politicians, especially with the choices that we’ve had. He did not like our politicians. He acted like he knew everything, especially politics-related. It got under my skin a lot.

On July 13, Crooks allegedly posted threatening messages on the gaming platform Steam. However, subsequent investigations cast doubt on the authenticity of the Steam account's ownership, complicating the narrative around his online activities.

This problematic messaging, alongside the timing of online searches, raises questions about Crooks' state of mind leading into the Republican National Convention, where he attempted the assassination on July 17. The quick response at the event prevented Crooks from achieving his objective, but the incident left a perturbing mark on the political and security landscapes.

Investigations Probe Crooks' Violent Shift

Media portrayals and imagery from the convention have painted a stark contrast between Crooks' public demeanor and his alleged intentions. The discussions around how someone with such apparent distaste and criticism for all politicians could resort to such drastic measures continue to unfold.

The ongoing investigations aim to uncover further motives and potentially missed warnings that could explain Crooks’ drastic transition from disapproval to attempted violence. The authenticity of digital platform threats is scrutinized to ensure all aspects of his actions are understood.

This incident has catalyzed discussions on political discourse, mental health, and security measures at political events, reiterating the need for vigilance and comprehensive safety protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future. Allowing space for political disagreements must be balanced with protecting against those who may turn to violence.
