Federal charges against the duo include acting as unregistered agents, conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering, and false statements. Both received bail—Sun’s at $1.5 million and Hu’s at $500,000.
The case began after evidence of Sun’s alleged misconduct led to her March 2023 dismissal. She joined Governor Hochul's team as deputy chief of staff in September 2021.
Charges detail a lavish lifestyle funded by their activities, including a $2.1 million Hawaiian condominium, a 2024 Ferrari, and a personal chef connected to a Chinese official.
Sun’s political role came into focus after her termination. "This individual was hired by the Executive Chamber more than a decade ago," said Governor Hochul’s press secretary, Avi Small. "We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering misconduct, immediately reported it to law enforcement, and assisted throughout the process."
