A high-stakes inspection of America's gold reserves looms as tech billionaire Elon Musk prepares to visit Fort Knox.

According to NewsNation, former President Donald Trump announced during his CPAC conference speech that Musk will review the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox to verify the presence of the nation's gold reserves.

The announcement follows Musk's recent social media posts questioning the existence of gold at the Kentucky facility. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent maintains that annual audits confirm all gold remains present and accounted for at the heavily guarded installation.

Fort Knox historical significance and security measures

The United States Bullion Depository has been a cornerstone of American financial security since 1937. Located approximately 35 miles south of Louisville, the facility spans over 100,000 acres and was initially established as Camp Knox during World War I.

The depository's construction in 1936 utilized massive amounts of materials, including 16,000 cubic feet of granite and 750 tons of reinforcing steel.

Security at Fort Knox remains exceptionally tight, with carefully orchestrated procedures preventing any single person from knowing all the steps required to access the vault. The facility has only welcomed visitors on three documented occasions throughout its history, with the most recent visit occurring in 2017 when then-Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin led a delegation.

The depository currently houses 147.3 million ounces of gold, representing half of the Treasury's total stored gold reserves. While the government values this gold at $6 billion based on the official rate of $42.22 per ounce, current market prices suggest the actual value could reach approximately $436 billion.

Musk questions gold reserves amid public scrutiny

Elon Musk's involvement began with his social media posts on X, where he expressed skepticism about the gold's presence.

Former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin addressed these concerns during a CNBC interview, stating: "The gold was there when I visited it, and I hope nobody's moved it. I'm sure they haven't."

The tech mogul has advocated for transparency, suggesting a live video walkthrough of the depository. His upcoming inspection appears unrelated to his role in the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) initiatives to reduce government spending.

Trump echoed these sentiments during his CPAC speech, saying:

We're going to open up the doors. We're going to inspect Fort Knox. I don't want to open it and the cupboards are bare.

Key players await unprecedented inspection

The proposed Fort Knox inspection represents a rare convergence of political, technological, and financial interests. Elon Musk, fresh from his social media campaign questioning the integrity of America's gold reserves, will conduct this extraordinary review at the behest of former President Donald Trump.

The inspection's timing and unprecedented nature have drawn the attention of financial experts and government officials, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent maintaining confidence in the facility's existing audit procedures.
