Elon Musk's DOGE Ends Lease at Obama Library Site

 March 6, 2025

The lease for the Obama Presidential Library in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, overseen by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been canceled.

According to Fox News, in a move designed to cut federal spending, DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has terminated the lease for the Obama Presidential Library site as part of an extensive federal lease termination project initiated by former President Donald Trump.

The released properties, nearly 750 in total, are expected to save taxpayers around $468 million. This decision includes stopping operations at the Hoffman Estates location, run by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which is separate from the Obama Presidential Center currently under construction in Chicago.

Key Details About the Obama Presidential Library Operations

The libraries at Hoffman Estates catered to the archival needs of the presidency, housing approximately 25 million unclassified paper documents and 35,000 artifacts. These include gifts and personal items related to the Obama administration.

The relocation process involves moving these documents and artifacts to College Park, Maryland. This transition is scheduled for late fiscal year 2025, following the library’s scheduled closure.

The Hoffman Estates library's content is systematically undergoing digitization, a process ensuring that these documents will be accessible at the new Obama Presidential Center.

Obama Presidential Center Continues to Develop Amid Changes

The Obama Presidential Center, managed by the Obama Foundation, remains unaffected by this change and is slated to open next year. It will feature a variety of facilities including a museum, a public library branch, and even an NBA-regulation basketball court.

However, the development of this center has not been without challenges. Originally estimated at $350 million, the projected costs have ballooned to $830 million as of 2021.

The library's lease at Hoffman Estates was initially secured by NARA in 2016 with an annual cost of $1.4 million. The property, previously owned by Hoffman Estates Medical Development LLC, had been specifically enhanced to meet the stringent storage requirements for historical documents and artifacts.

Fiscal Strategies and Public Savings

As stated by a NARA spokesperson, "The Hoffman Estates library was scheduled to close in late Fiscal Year 2025 and move to College Park in Maryland." This statement underscores the planned nature of the library's closure and relocation, aligning with DOGE's broader fiscal responsibility strategy.

This plan reflects a significant shift in how the federal government manages its assets, aiming to optimize operational costs against public spending needs.

Ultimately, the decision to terminate the library lease contributes to a broader cost-cutting initiative while also ensuring continuity in the accessibility and preservation of historical documents.

The operation transitions to College Park, while the Obama Presidential Center will serve as a new hub for community engagement and education in Chicago.
