Elon Musk accuses Rep. Omar of treason over Somalia remarks

 December 11, 2025, NEWS

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has thrown a sharp jab at Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., accusing her of treason over resurfaced comments that seem to prioritize Somalia over American interests.

As reported by Newsmax, Musk posted a clip of Omar addressing Somali American constituents in Minneapolis on Jan. 27, 2024, captioning it with a blunt statement, "This sounds like treason."

In the video, translated from Somali, Omar appears to assure her audience that she stands guard for Somalia’s interests within the U.S. system. Her words, as per the translation, paint a troubling picture of divided loyalty at best.

Translated Remarks Stir Controversy

The translated speech, delivered at a Minneapolis hotel, includes Omar stating, "Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system." If accurate, this declaration raises serious questions about where her true allegiance lies.

Further excerpts from the translation show Omar asserting that the U.S. government will follow the directives of Somali Americans. She reportedly added, "They must follow our orders and that is how we will safeguard the interest of Somalia," which sounds more like a foreign agent’s pledge than a U.S. lawmaker’s duty.

Omar has pushed back against the translation’s accuracy, calling the criticism rooted in xenophobia and Islamophobia. Yet, the footage continues to fuel debate over whether her words align with her oath to uphold American interests first.

Trump Joins the Fray with Criticism

Hours before Musk’s post, President Donald Trump took aim at Omar during a rally in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania. His sharp words, including a call to “get her the hell out,” were met with chants of “Send her back!” from the crowd, as reported by the New York Post.

Trump’s remarks didn’t hold back, mocking Omar’s background and questioning her contributions as a lawmaker. While his tone may sting, it echoes a frustration many feel about elected officials who appear to champion foreign agendas over domestic needs.

Omar fired back on X, labeling Trump’s fixation on her as “beyond weird” and accusing him of peddling bigoted lies. Her response sidesteps the core issue of her translated statements, focusing instead on personal grievances with the president.

Political Fallout and Calls for Accountability

The controversy isn’t new—back when the video first surfaced, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., demanded Omar “resign in disgrace.” His statement on X called her comments a direct violation of her oath, reflecting a deep unease among colleagues about her priorities.

Emmer’s reaction underscores a broader concern that public office demands unwavering commitment to the nation that elected you. When a lawmaker’s words suggest otherwise, it erodes trust in the very system they swore to serve.

Omar’s defense at the time aligned her speech with U.S. policy on Somalia’s borders, including the disputed Somaliland region. But that explanation struggles to justify the tone of her translated remarks, which seem to promise protection for a foreign state over American interests.

A Deeper Divide on Loyalty and Duty

This saga with Omar highlights a growing tension in our political landscape about what loyalty means in a diverse nation. Her comments, if accurately translated, strike at the heart of whether elected officials can balance heritage with their sworn duties.

Musk’s accusation of treason, while harsh, taps into a real frustration among Americans who expect their representatives to put this country first. It’s not about rejecting cultural roots but ensuring that public service doesn’t become a platform for foreign advocacy.

As this debate unfolds, the question remains whether Omar’s words were misunderstood or a genuine misstep. Either way, the scrutiny she faces serves as a reminder that words carry weight, especially when they come from those entrusted with America’s future.
