The Democratic Socialists of America's self-described Marxist-Leninist-Maoist caucus has formally condemned Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as an "opportunist dilettante" unfit to carry the socialist banner, a rejection that says as much about the far left's demands as it does about AOC's ambitions.
The DSA Liberation Caucus, a faction formed in 2025, issued a written statement rejecting any effort to position the New York congresswoman as "the future presidential standard-bearer for DSA, or for the broader socialist movement." The group accused Ocasio-Cortez of abandoning core socialist and anti-Zionist commitments as she climbs toward a possible 2028 White House run, Fox News Digital reported.
The statement lands as Ocasio-Cortez polls as the leading choice among Democrats for 2028, though she has not formally announced whether she will seek the presidency or a Senate seat. For mainstream conservative voters watching the Democratic bench, the episode offers a useful X-ray of the party's internal fault lines, and of the ideological company AOC has kept on her way up.
The Liberation Caucus laid out a specific bill of particulars. The DSA's National Political Committee had already withdrawn a conditional endorsement of Ocasio-Cortez in 2024, determining that she had hosted a public panel with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, an organization the caucus labeled "Zionist." The congresswoman also voted to defend Israel's right to exist and co-signed a statement with House Democrats supporting Israel's right to defensive systems, even after voting against supplemental weapons funding for the country.
In the caucus's framing, those actions were disqualifying.
"In short, it was determined that she had failed to meet conditions concerning Palestine solidarity."
That a sitting member of Congress could fail a political purity test for acknowledging Israel's right to exist tells you where the DSA Liberation Caucus sits on the spectrum. The group maintains a website page defending Maoism, including a section that labels the era of mass starvation under Mao Zedong's rule as "misconception 4" on a list of supposed myths about the ideology.
These are not marginal cranks operating in total isolation. The DSA is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and its internal fractures over 2028 endorsement politics reflect a broader struggle over how far left the American left is willing to go.
Israel was not the caucus's only grievance. The Liberation Caucus accused Ocasio-Cortez of retreating from the 2020 movement to defund the police and from the broader language of "abolition" that animated progressive activism that year. In an ABC interview, AOC herself called the 2020 progressive era, which she labeled "Woke 1", "crazyyyyy."
The caucus did not appreciate the candor.
"She has dismissed the mass radicalization around policing and abolition as part of the supposed excesses of 'Woke 1', seeking to reduce the historic Black-led uprising of 2020 to an embarrassing political phase."
The statement went further, accusing Ocasio-Cortez of riding the "abolition" wave when it was politically useful and discarding it once she outgrew the movement.
"Ironically, her first electoral victory came in the heat of 'Woke 1', where she trafficked in the language of abolition. Now that she feels that she no longer needs it, she condemns it. This is the action of an opportunist dilettante, devoid of any principles whatsoever, not a socialist."
Set aside the Maoist framing for a moment, and the accusation itself is worth examining. AOC built her national brand on the most radical edge of progressive politics, the Green New Deal, defunding the police, abolition rhetoric. Now, as progressive Democrats retreat from their own record ahead of a national election, the congresswoman appears to be doing the same repositioning that ambitious politicians always do. The Maoists call it betrayal. A more honest reading is that AOC adopted positions she now finds inconvenient, and the people who believed her are angry about it.
The Liberation Caucus's rejection of Ocasio-Cortez does not mean the broader DSA has moved toward the center. Far from it. The organization recently announced a program called "Workers Deserve More" that calls for the complete elimination of the Senate, the presidency, and the Supreme Court. Every candidate seeking a formal DSA endorsement must accept and promote that platform.
Read that again: the organization that helped launch AOC's career now requires endorsed candidates to support abolishing the very office she may seek.
Fox News Digital requested comment from both the DSA Liberation Caucus and Ocasio-Cortez's office. Neither responded.
Meanwhile, the New York City DSA chapter, which has routinely endorsed Ocasio-Cortez throughout her races, has hinted at splitting away from the national DSA over internal disagreements, including the question of endorsing AOC. The fracture runs deep enough that the organization's largest local chapter may break off entirely.
AOC's trajectory from political setbacks to front-runner status among Democratic presidential hopefuls has been one of the more remarkable arcs in recent American politics. But the DSA episode reveals a structural problem she cannot moderate her way out of easily. The coalition that built her includes people who defend Mao's famine record and demand the abolition of constitutional government. Walking away from them means admitting the alliance was always a marriage of convenience.
The caucus's closing language left no room for reconciliation. It urged the "socialist left" to deliver a "clear answer" to any AOC presidential campaign: "No."
"We will not endorse or give succor to a campaign to put a social democrat at the head of an empire, where she will make even more capitulations to the imperialists, and drag our organization into antagonistic contradiction after antagonistic contradiction."
The statement added, flatly: "This is not the behavior of socialist cadres."
That language, "cadres," "imperialists," "antagonistic contradiction", is not the vocabulary of mainstream American politics. It is the vocabulary of revolutionary Marxism, and it is the ideological water in which AOC's earliest political supporters swim. Republican leaders like Ted Cruz have already flagged AOC as the Democrats' top presidential contender, and the DSA's internal civil war over her candidacy only sharpens the question voters will eventually face: how far left is the Democratic Party's center of gravity?
The DSA Liberation Caucus describes itself as a "Marxist-Leninist-Maoist caucus in Democratic Socialists of America." Its website defends the legacy of Maoism. Its platform demands the destruction of the constitutional order. And its complaint about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is that she is not radical enough.
As left-wing primary victories fuel 2028 speculation, that fact alone should tell the average voter everything they need to know, not about the Maoists, but about the political ecosystem that produced the congresswoman from New York in the first place.
When the people who defend famine as a "misconception" say you've gone soft, the problem was never moderation. The problem was the starting point.
