DOJ Urged to Act on Michael Cohen’s Alleged Deceptions

 May 22, 2024

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer called the Department of Justice to "take immediate action" in prosecuting former Trump attorney Michael Cohen for his alleged lies to Congress.

As Fox News reported, Emmer pledged to utilize all available resources to ensure the DOJ pursues legal action against Cohen for his purported false statements.

Cohen's critical role in the high-profile criminal case against former President Donald Trump highlighted numerous controversies. Despite his central testimony, in which he denied Trump's charges, Cohen admitted to stealing from the Trump Organization, casting shadows on his credibility.

Accusations of Falsehoods and Perjury

Tom Emmer has publicly labeled Michael Cohen as a "pathological liar," specifically pointing to Cohen's prior contradictions in his congressional testimonies. Cohen confessed in November 2018 to lying before the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, adding weight to Emmer's allegations.

Moreover, numerous criminal referrals regarding Cohen's alleged falsehoods have recently been submitted by House committees. This action encapsulates the growing legislative scrutiny over his statements.

In his dialogue with Attorney General Merrick Garland, Tom Emmer highlighted Cohen’s deceit, especially concerning his ambitions within the Trump White House. This contradicts his earlier statements of disinterest in such roles.

Alleged Collusion and Protection

Adding complexity to the case, Matthew Colangelo, who was involved in prosecuting Trump, had connections with the Biden administration and the Democratic National Committee. This overlap has triggered accusations from Emmer of potential collusion between the Biden DOJ and the proceedings against Trump.

Emmer’s assertion focuses primarily on the preferential treatment he perceives is being given to Cohen, whom he describes as the prosecution's key yet flawed witness.

Tom Emmer told Fox News:

Cohen is not only a liar and a thief, he's the only person guilty of a crime in Alvin Bragg's witch hunt against President Trump. We’re going to use every resource at our disposal to hold Joe Biden’s corrupt Justice Department’s feet to the fire until Convict Cohen is behind bars where he belongs and Americans get the answers they deserve about the shady cast of characters who’re attempting to pull off the greatest sham in American history.

Emmer’s communications also demand a thorough examination of documents related to Colangelo’s employment and relationships, accentuating the urgency of transparency in this high-stakes legal maneuvering.

Request for DOJ Action and Transparency

Tom Emmer is determined to uncover any biases or misjudgments affecting the case's integrity, requesting documentation on the roles and affiliations of key figures like Colangelo.

Emmer believes Merrick Garland's inaction in addressing the accusations against Cohen not only evades justice but also fuels perceptions of government partiality. Left unchecked, this issue could erode public trust in legal institutions and exacerbate political divisions, suggesting a two-tiered system of accountability.

Emmer's campaign against what he sees as a flawed legal process reflects a broader political battle, with a significant portion of the American public demanding fairness and transparency in legal proceedings, particularly when they intersect with national politics.
