DOJ official demands resignation of New York AG Letitia James

 August 21, 2025, NEWS

Ed Martin, head of the Justice Department’s Weaponization Working Group, has ignited a firestorm by publicly calling for the resignation of New York Attorney General Letitia James. This bold move comes just days into a fresh investigation targeting her actions.

According to ABC News, Martin sent a letter last week to James’ attorney, urging her to step down before the investigation fully unfolds. The probe centers on her business fraud case against President Donald Trump and her office’s corruption case against the National Rifle Association.

This isn’t just a procedural step; it’s a direct challenge to James’ tenure. Martin’s letter claims her resignation would serve the national interest and bring peace to New York and beyond.

Investigation Targets High-Profile Cases

Federal prosecutors kicked off this scrutiny earlier this month with subpoenas tied to a civil rights investigation into James’ legal battles. Her case against Trump resulted in a liability finding last year for a decade of fraud that inflated his net worth, now under appeal.

Meanwhile, her office secured a $4 million judgment against NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre after a jury found misuse of donor funds for personal luxuries. Both cases have made James a lightning rod for criticism among those who see her actions as overreach.

Martin’s probe doesn’t stop there; it also examines two properties James owns in New York and Virginia. While no formal accusations of wrongdoing have been made, the breadth of this inquiry signals a no-holds-barred approach.

Controversial Tactics Raise Eyebrows

Martin’s methods have drawn sharp rebuke, especially after he appeared outside James’ Brooklyn home on Aug. 15, clad in a trench coat, posing for a New York Post photographer. When questioned by a neighbor, he casually said he was “just looking at houses,” though he later admitted to Fox News he wanted to “lay eyes” on the property as a prosecutor.

This stunt, seemingly staged, has been called out as a breach of Justice Department protocol. Even Attorney General Pam Bondi and her deputy, Todd Blanche, reportedly told Martin his actions were unhelpful and counterproductive.

Critics argue this kind of grandstanding undermines the integrity of the investigation. It paints a picture of personal vendetta rather than a pursuit of justice, especially given the timing and public nature of his demands.

Retribution or Righteous Inquiry?

Martin’s letter didn’t mince words, stating, “Her resignation from office would give the people of New York and America more peace than proceeding.” Yet, one has to wonder if this rush to judgment skips over the very principles of due process that conservatives often champion.

James’ attorney, Abbe Lowell, fired back in a letter sent Monday, accusing Martin of ignoring evidence and law to fulfill a directive of revenge from President Trump and Attorney General Bondi. Lowell pointedly noted, “DOJ has firm policies against using investigations and against using prosecutorial power for achieving political ends.”

Lowell’s response cuts to the core of a deeper concern: is this probe about accountability or a political hit job? The lack of initial fact-finding, paired with Martin’s premature calls for resignation, tilts the optics toward the latter.

A Battle of Principle and Power

The investigation into James aligns with President Trump’s stated intent to push back against perceived adversaries, with Martin tapped to spearhead this effort. For many who’ve watched James’ aggressive pursuit of Trump and the NRA, this feels like a long-overdue reckoning.

Still, the manner of Martin’s approach risks alienating even those who question James’ methods. Justice should be a scalpel, not a sledgehammer, and public stunts outside someone’s home don’t exactly scream impartiality.

As this saga unfolds, the real question is whether the pursuit of truth will prevail over the temptation of political theater. Americans deserve investigations grounded in fact, not fueled by spectacle or predetermined outcomes.
