DHS Says Protesting Foreign Students Could Face Harsher Penalties

 April 25, 2024

The state of our college campuses right now is a complete and utter disgrace.

We are to the point that schools are choosing to go remote, turning their campuses over to protesters rather than tuition-paying students who want to learn, but the Department of Homeland Security now appears to be waking up on this front.

Talking Points…
- College campuses becoming unsafe
- DHS threatens harsher penalties

College Campus Threats

If you have been watching the news lately, you have seen these insane protests that are taking place all across the country on college campuses. Columbia has been getting all the attention, but this is happening everywhere right now, and Democrats are applauding it.

Watching the local news this week in Texas, there were protests at the University of Texas, with students getting in the face of officers and threatening other students. We are seeing tent cities taking over campuses of protesters who do not even attend school at that university. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s daughter was arrested for trespassing at Columbia, which Democrats tried to say was targeted as political retribution against Rep. Omar.

The situation at Columbia has gotten so bad, that the school has temporarily gone to all remote learning to keep students safe. So just think about that… students that pay $60,000 a year for tuition are now forced to take classes via Zoom because pro-terrorist protesters have taken over the campus. There have been very few repercussions to this point, but the Department of Homeland Security is finally waking up.

DHS Threatens Protesting Foreign Students

These protests have officially crossed the line from free speech to threatening events. And now we are seeing foreign students from some of these countries get involved, expressing their hatred for Israel and intimidating Jewish students at these schools. Republicans are now starting to pressure Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of Homeland Security to deport these students for backing Hamas and threatening other students on campus.

This charge is being led by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). Blackburn is now calling for the deportation of these students, posting on X:

"Immediately deport all foreign students studying in the USA that support Hamas. We should also revoke federal student loans for any American student arrested for supporting Hamas.”

Suspensions are now being threatened against many of these students who are protesting, which could actually lead to deportation for students deemed to not be making progress in their studies. To that point, the DHS confirmed its policy on this, stating:

"A temporary suspension, even if that were a final determination for a student, does not necessarily mean that the student would fall below ‘normal progress’ in his/her course of study.

"If a student were to be suspended, DHS would need reason to believe that the student would not be able to make normal progress in his/her course of study. And if it believed a suspension merited that type of decision, it would have to initiate removal proceedings, which would be done on a case-by-case basis in conjunction with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA)."

Analysis

With how Mayorkas has performed thus far, we all know that policy means little to him in terms of enforcement. However, This gives us a window of hope in terms of what we can do moving forward if the GOP can take the White House back.

If we want to rid our school of these pro-terrorist antisemites, this is the way to go about it. Now, we need schools to not only suspend these students but also expel them for violating the student code of conduct. If that happens, there is no way the DHS could interpret them as being able to maintain “normal progress,” and the case would immediately go before an immigration judge for a decision. Then we start taking names of judges who do not decide on deportation and have them removed from the bench once the GOP takes charge again.
