Democrats tentatively consider Harris for 2028 despite 2024 defeat

 May 4, 2025, NEWS

In the wake of a significant electoral defeat, former Vice President Kamala Harris is contemplating her next political move.

According to News Nation, Kamala Harris might consider a 2028 presidential bid amidst skepticism from her party colleagues following her 2024 loss.

After losing the presidency to Donald Trump in a challenging campaign during the 2024 elections, Senate Democrats share mixed feelings about Harris's potential future candidacy. Nonetheless, she retains a robust network and significant campaign resources.

Debating Harris's Next Steps

Recently appearing at a San Francisco gala, Harris openly criticized the Trump administration for ushering in what she described as an economic crisis. At 60, she is assessing a range of options for her political future, which could include running for Governor of California in 2026 or another presidential attempt in 2028.

Despite the doubts expressed, not all Democrats dismiss the value Harris could still bring. Senator John Hickenlooper mentioned that her outlook might yet prove essential in upcoming political debates.

Senator Martin Heinrich expressed admiration for Harris, citing their time spent together in the Senate as particularly positive.

Varied Opinions Within the Democratic Party

While some Democrats like Heinrich hold a favorable view of Harris, others advocate for a shift in party leadership. Democratic Whip Dick Durbin emphasized the need for new voices at the helm. Additionally, Democratic strategist Steve Jarding warned not to undermine Harris's capabilities despite her previous election results. He highlighted the importance of taking her seriously as a contender.

Senator Richard Blumenthal also spoke up, citing factors beyond Harris's control that may have contributed to her 2024 defeat but recognizing her potential for a future candidacy.

Fundraising Efforts and Campaign Challenges

The 2024 campaign, although it lasted merely 107 days, saw Harris raising a staggering $1 billion, with total expenditures surpassing $2 billion. However, her campaign faced criticism for its brevity and the repercussions it had on other Democratic races.

Some of Harris's setbacks were also attributed to former President Biden’s campaign decisions, including his late withdrawal from the race and his underperformance in debates, which exacerbated the Democrats' challenges. Harris has a resilient background in politics, previously serving as California's senator and as attorney general before her vice-presidency.

Perspectives on Leadership Renewal

An anonymous Democratic senator bluntly suggested Harris should move on, indicating the need for fresh Democratic candidates ahead of the next electoral cycle.

A more historical perspective was likened by referring to former Sen. Jon Tester's views on Hillary Clinton's second presidential run, viewed by many as a misstep for the party. Yet, Senator Martin Heinrich also discussed the consequential nature of campaign duration, suggesting that a longer campaign might have allowed voters a better chance to connect with Harris.

Despite the varied perspectives within the Democratic ranks about her potential candidacy, Kamala Harris's political journey remains a subject of discussion and speculation. As Democrats navigate their strategic directions post-2024, Harris's decision on whether to aim for the presidency again or perhaps seek the governorship in California will be crucial in shaping her political legacy and possibly the future trajectory of her party.
