 March 16, 2025

A devastating multi-vehicle collision late Thursday evening on Interstate 35 in north Austin has claimed at least five lives, including an infant.

According to News Nation, the chaos, involving 17 vehicles such as semitrailers, resulted in 11 injuries and significant disruptions.

Authorities have charged Solomun Weldekeal Araya, aged 37, with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, leading to serious legal repercussions. These charges stem from allegations of Araya driving under the influence during the incident.

Collision Impact and Emergency Responses

The violent crash implicated multiple vehicles including a semitrailer from ZBN Transport LLC and an Amazon truck. ZBN Transport has reported they lost contact with their driver immediately following the incident. The accident's aftermath spread debris and wreckage over a tenth of a mile along the roadway.

Response units acted swiftly and evacuated all individuals needing immediate medical attention within approximately 40 minutes, prioritizing those in critical condition. Four adults sustained grave, life-threatening injuries, while others, including a child, suffered less severe harm.

Cleanup crews faced additional challenges due to a diesel spill associated with the crash, complicating efforts to clear the accident scene.

Road Closures and Transport Adjustments

Authorities closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 35 between Parmer and Howard Lanes to facilitate forensic investigations and clearing operations. The Texas Department of Transportation updated commuters on alternative routes to help with disruptions. Officials suspended tolls from SH 45 to US 290 East to alleviate traffic congestion.

The department spokesperson stated, "Tolls are being waived from SH 45 to US 290 East. I-35 main lanes are expected to remain closed for several more hours as law enforcement continues to investigate."

This crash occurred around 11:20 p.m., causing severe disruptions into the early hours of Friday. It prompted a large-scale emergency response, bringing together multiple law enforcement and medical teams to the site.

Community and Bystander Reactions

A bystander expressed their shock at the scene, remarking simply, "It was hard to see this." Their brief statement captures the grim mood at the site, where teams worked through the night under floodlights, piecing together the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Texas Department of Transportation announces, "Tolls are being waived from SH 45 to US 290 East. I-35 main lanes are expected to remain closed for several more hours as law enforcement continues to investigate."

The cause of the crash has not yet been officially determined. Authorities continue their examination of the wreckage and engage with witnesses to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the accident. This complex investigation aims to ascertain contributing factors, such as mechanical failures, road conditions, and driver behavior, particularly focusing on the role intoxication might have played, as suggested by the charges levelled against Araya.

The community mourns the loss of life and the impact on numerous families, further intensified by the presence of children among the victims. This tragic event reiterates the dangers of impaired driving and has reignited discussions around road safety and enforcement on busy highways like Interstate 35.

The local and national discourse is likely to touch on issues of vehicular safety, road maintenance, and trucking regulations in the wake of this extensive incident. As investigations continue, officials will closely monitor the legal proceedings against Solomun Weldekeal Araya to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
