A serious oversight by immigration authorities led to the unintended release of a convicted murderer into the U.S. community.
According to Breitbart, a 44-year-old Colombian man, previously convicted of premeditated murder, was mistakenly freed after deceiving the U.S. Border Patrol about his criminal past. This comes as Biden continues to have lackluster border policies, resulting in many finding him guilty for the crimes that have been committed.
In a grave lapse of border security, the man was detained by Border Patrol near San Ysidro, California, on September 30, 2022.
He entered the U.S. illegally and subsequently misled authorities about his criminal records in both Colombia and the United States.
Back in Colombia, the individual had been convicted in April 2016 for a grave crime of premeditated murder and was given a prison sentence of more than four years. Despite this severe charge, when faced with U.S. immigration officials, he claimed he had never been arrested.
Following his arrest, he was issued a Notice to Appear before a federal immigration judge on October 6, 2022. Little over a month later, on November 10, 2022, he was released into the Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
It wasn't until November 7, 2023, a full year after his release, that ICE officials unraveled the truth about his murder conviction.
This discovery prompted a verification request to Colombian authorities, who confirmed the conviction in February 2024.
With confirmation from Colombian authorities, ICE agents swiftly arrested the man in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 3, 2024. He is currently detained, and awaiting deportation proceedings.
Todd Lyons, a spokesperson for ICE, expressed his dismay over the incident. Lyons stated, "This Colombian national lied to immigration officials about his violent past to gain entrance into the United States."
We cannot allow convicted murderers to roam freely in our New England neighborhoods. This stark scenario highlights potential vulnerabilities in the U.S. immigration system, particularly in the verification processes used for individuals claiming asylum or entering under duress.
