Controversy surrounds trump portrait by British artist

 April 6, 2025

Sarah Boardman's artistic depiction of Donald Trump has sparked intense debate.

According to the Daily Mail, British painter Sarah Boardman faced significant repercussions after Donald Trump condemned her portrait of him, leading to its removal from the Colorado State Capitol.

Sarah Boardman, a painter trained in classical realism during the '80s in Germany, was commissioned for this high-profile task. The portrait that stirred such contention had been on display since its unveiling in 2019.

Sarah Boardman's Career and Expertise

Sarah has previously created portraits of other notable figures, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush, highlighting her extensive experience with political figures. Accompanying the initial praise, her portrayal of Trump remained in the Colorado State Capitol Building Rotunda until recently. Though initially met with positive feedback, Trump's public dissatisfaction has had a detrimental impact on Boardman’s professional life. The reactions from Trump's supporters have especially exacerbated the situation, affecting Boardman's business negatively.

Trump's denunciation included a claim that many Coloradans had expressed objections to the portrait's display, which he attached to Governor Jared Polis. Polis, a Democrat, was mentioned by Trump in his criticism, as having a participatory role in the portrait's governance.

Reaction to Trump's Criticism

Following the allegations, the Colorado State Capitol Advisory Committee, which had initially approved the work, took the action to relocate the portrait into storage. This move came despite the long-standing positive acclaim it had originally received.

Trump did not withhold harsh words. "The artist also did President Obama, and he looks wonderful, but the one on me is truly the worst," he remarked, casting stark disparities between Boardman's works. His critique went further, implicitly questioning Boardman's abilities as an artist worsening with age. "She must have lost her talent as she got older," Trump commented on the artistic quality.

Sarah Boardman Responds to Allegations

Sarah Boardman defended her craftsmanship, stressing the neutrality of her approach:

President Trump is entitled to comment freely, as we all are, but the additional allegations that I 'purposefully distorted' the portrait, and that I 'must have lost my talent as I got older' are now directly and negatively impacting my business of over 41 years which now is in danger of not recovering.

"For the six years that the portrait hung in the Colorado State Capitol Building Rotunda, I received overwhelmingly positive reviews and feedback," added Sarah, reflecting on the better times regarding the public’s perception of her work.

Regarding the process and oversight, Boardman mentioned, "The reference photograph and my subsequent 'works in progress' were all approved, throughout that process, by that committee." This highlighted the thorough review her work underwent before its acceptance and unveiling.

Artistic Integrity and Approval

Sarah emphasized her commitment to professional standards, stating, "I completed the portrait accurately, without 'purposeful distortion', political bias, or any attempt to caricature the subject, actual or implied." Her statement underlines her dedication to artistic integrity above political commentary.

The controversy has elevated to a national conversation, reflecting on how art intersects with political views and the consequences for artists in the limelight. The incident has illuminated not only the volatile nature of political endorsement but also the personal toll on the artists involved.

The personal and professional impact on Sarah Boardman underlines the significant weight that public, especially politically-charged, reactions can have on artistic careers. With her business in jeopardy and her integrity questioned, the future remains uncertain for the seasoned painter.
