Rael Enteen, who was recorded without his awareness, criticized multiple aspects of the NFL community to an undercover reporter. His remarks included negative stereotypes about the Commanders' black and religious players, whom he generally labeled as homophobic, drawing primarily from the cultural backdrop of hip-hop. Enteen stated that aspects of Black culture "are inherently very homophobic," which is a sentiment he hopes will evolve.
Enteen openly criticized the NFL’s engagement with social justice themes, labeling efforts like Black Lives Matter and Pride as merely superficial, aimed at profit rather than true change. He claimed that such initiatives were just to "make as much money as possible," suggesting a lack of genuine commitment to the causes.
Rael Enteen didn’t spare the NFL leadership from his sharp criticisms either. He attacked NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, describing him as a high-paid puppet controlled by powerful figures like Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Furthermore, Enteen accused certain unnamed owners and Goodell himself of racism and homophobia, a charge that escalated the controversy surrounding his comments.
Having joined the Washington Commanders in 2020 and was promoted in April 2022, Enteen has had a significant role in shaping the team’s media and content presence.
His career in the NFL includes previous tenure with the New York Jets between 2016 and 2018. Coming into prominence during a transitional time for the Commanders amid controversies of the former owner Dan Snyder, Enteen’s fall from grace marks another turbulent chapter for the team.
Enteen stated:
A big chunk [of the Commanders roster] is very low-income African-Americans that comes from a community that is inherently very homophobic. I love hip-hop, hip-hop is very homophobic. It's a cultural thing that I hope gets better.
While detailing his views on NFL fans, Enteen stereotyped the majority as undereducated and prone to alcoholic tendencies. This broad generalization not only offends the vast and diverse fanbase of the NFL but also undermines the community spirit fostered by these sporting events.
The Washington Commanders have responded by suspending Rael Enteen, citing a breach of the organization's values. The official statement highlighted that his language "runs counter to our values." The team has launched an internal investigation to further address this issue and stated, "We have suspended the employee pending an internal investigation and will reserve further comment at this time."
