A 37-year-old Lakewood, Colorado, elementary school art teacher was found dead in her home with a knife wound to her neck, and her husband now sits in jail without bond after detectives say his story kept changing.
Patrick Theodore "Ted" Barnett, 40, called 911 shortly after 6 a.m. on August 13, telling dispatchers his wife Lindsey had cut herself and her throat and was not breathing. Two young children, a toddler and an infant, were inside the home. First responders found Lindsey Barnett in the shower with a five- to six-inch laceration across the front of her neck and a roughly five-inch serrated knife beside her body.
But the physical evidence inside the couple's bedroom told a different story, one that led Lakewood police to arrest Barnett that same evening on suspicion of first-degree murder.
Officers who entered the home documented a large amount of blood covering portions of the couple's bed, including the sheets and a pillow, along with what appeared to be blood clots. A trail of blood ran from the bed toward the bathroom. Comparatively little blood surrounded Lindsey's body where it lay in the shower.
Beside the bed, officers found a footprint described as "dainty" and appearing to have come from a woman's foot. A knocked-over plant sat nearby, its dirt scattered in the direction of the bathroom. Forensic processing later revealed additional blood between the bed and the bathroom that was not visible to the naked eye.
The wound to Lindsey's neck appeared to have injured a major artery. Her body bore bruises on her arms, legs, back, and hips, a fresh injury to her left knee, a scratch across her right shoulder, and a cut to her left index finger. The detective who prepared the arrest affidavit described the finger wound as consistent with a defensive injury, the kind left when someone grabs at a blade.
Barnett's own body raised questions. A crime scene investigator photographed fresh scratches and cuts on his upper arm, chest, abdomen, and near his collarbone. The detective wrote that the marks were consistent with fingernail scratches and defensive wounds. Apparent dried blood was visible on Barnett's neck, extending into his beard, and a smear of apparent blood sat behind his right ear.
One detail stood out. Barnett told investigators he had moved Lindsey while checking her pulse. His hands, however, were clean of blood.
Barnett attributed a fresh injury on his thumb to an ultimate Frisbee game he said took place in July, claiming a scab had recently fallen off. Detectives noted the explanation but continued pressing.
Barnett spoke with investigators multiple times on August 13, and the arrest affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital tracks what police described as shifting and inconsistent statements across those conversations.
He told detectives he and Lindsey had been having marital problems for several months and were sleeping separately, he in the basement, she in the main bedroom upstairs. He said he woke around 5:30 a.m., heard the shower running, went upstairs, and found Lindsey bleeding.
In the initial interview, Barnett denied any infidelity. That claim collapsed hours later when a woman called police requesting a welfare check on Barnett and identified herself as his girlfriend. She told investigators Barnett had said he was in the process of divorcing Lindsey and that Lindsey was living outside the home, a claim contradicted by the fact that Lindsey was found dead inside the couple's house.
Lakewood police arrested Barnett during a traffic stop in Evergreen, a mountain community west of Denver, and brought him back to Lakewood for further questioning.
During a third interview, Barnett acknowledged the extramarital relationship but claimed Lindsey knew about it and was fine with it. He said he had partially picked Lindsey up in the shower to check her pulse, turned off the water, and then sat on the blood-covered bed while speaking with the 911 dispatcher. He could not explain the apparent blood on his neck or behind his ear.
Detectives told Barnett directly: they believed Lindsey had died in the bed and did not get to the shower on her own.
Barnett maintained that he found his wife in the shower and said he had no knowledge of what happened or how she got there.
Barnett told detectives Lindsey had experienced prepartum and postpartum depression, a detail that, if accepted, might have supported the notion she harmed herself. Lindsey's mother gave investigators a sharply different picture. She said her daughter had never expressed suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide and was making plans for the upcoming school year at the time of her death.
The mother described the couple's relationship as troubled in recent months. She told detectives Barnett was "verbally abusive and controlling toward Lindsey," though she said he had never been physically abusive. She recalled witnessing arguments in which Barnett yelled while Lindsey remained calm.
Lindsey Barnett taught art at both Hutchinson Elementary and Westgate Elementary in the Lakewood area. Principal DeAnn Hoffman of Hutchinson Elementary wrote a letter to families after the news broke.
Hoffman called Lindsey "a joy to have in our school," describing her deep passion for teaching art and her dedication to students. She said Lindsey "always put our kids first" and that the loss had "shaken our entire community." The school made mental health and district support staff available to students and employees.
Barnett was booked at the Jefferson County jail on August 13 and is being held without bond. He is scheduled to return to court on August 20. The First Judicial District Attorney's Office will review the case for potential formal charges.
In seeking the first-degree murder charge, the detective cited the forensic evidence indicating Lindsey's body had been moved from the bed to the shower, Barnett's injuries, the apparent blood on his body, and what investigators described as his shifting and inconsistent statements.
A 37-year-old mother and teacher is dead. Two small children no longer have her. The evidence police gathered in a single day was enough to hold her husband without bond, and the case file is still growing.
