Colorado Man Held for Alleged Cremation Attempt That Sparked Wildfire

 September 28, 2024

A tragic mishap attributed to a man’s attempt to cremate his deceased dog has led to significant consequences.

Brent Scott Garber, a 63-year-old Colorado resident, faces charges after his actions allegedly ignited a wildfire in Nucla, Colorado, PEOPLE reported.

Initial Findings at the Fire's Origin

An investigation unfolded rapidly after the Bucktail Fire began in early August, quickly drawing the attention of local authorities.

The event took a turn when a commander from the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office noticed Garber fleeing the emerging fire scene on an ATV. This observance was crucial in labeling him a suspect early in the investigation.

Upon examining the site where the blaze originated, officials discovered a makeshift crematory in a dug-out cave. Within it was a partially charred canine corpse.

Dog's Memorial Discovered at the Scene

Beside the dog’s remains, a large rock served as a poignant memorial, inscribed for "Rocket Dog" who lived from October 2017 to July 2024. The words "Rest in Peace Buddy" adorned this memorial, clearly explaining Garber's intentions at the tragic site.

Further details provided by state fire investigators corroborated the initial findings, confirming Garber’s involvement in the ill-fated cremation attempt.

The situation presents a complex narrative of grief and unintended disaster. Garber's actions, while driven by emotional loss, precipitated one of the local area’s most significant wildfires of the season.

Legal Repercussions for Emotional Acts

Following the incident and discovery at the scene, the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Garber on September 5.

Garber was subsequently charged with arson and trespassing, reflecting the severity of the consequences stemming from his initially private act. The legal implications mark a regrettable conclusion to what began as a personal moment of mourning.

Commander Tim Binder from the sheriff's office provided insight into how the suspect was quickly identified. He said:

A partially burned dog's body was found in the cave, along with a large rock with the words 'Oct. 2017 July 2024, Rocket Dog, Rest in Peace Buddy' in bone glued on the surface. He was identified as a suspect after I saw him driving away on an ATV just minutes after the fire started.

The intricate details of the incident have stirred both community and national discussions on the risks associated with unauthorized fire use in vulnerable regions.

Community and Environmental Impact

The wildfire not only posed a direct threat to local communities, residences, and wildlife but also served as a stark reminder of the broader implications of individual actions on public safety.

The Bucktail Fire, stoked unintentionally by Garber's attempt at cremation, underscored the need for stringent adherence to local laws, particularly the stringent regulations around open fires in Colorado's arid climate.

In retrospect, this unfortunate episode highlights the unexpected paths that personal grief can take and the extensive fallout that can arise from what are initially private acts of mourning.
