CNN Poll Shows 76% of Dem Voters Favor Kamala Harris for Nomination

 July 24, 2024

In a recent poll from CNN, an overwhelming majority of Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters expressed their preference for Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election.

This preference surge in Harris' favor follows President Joe Biden’s decision to remove himself from contention for another term in office, as Breitbart reports.

The poll, which surveyed 1,631 registered voters on July 22-23, reflects a significant favorability boost for Harris, despite the potential challenges she faces among younger voters. According to the poll’s findings, Harris has not yet matched the 2020 performance of Biden among the 18-34 demographic, particularly in comparison to former President Donald Trump’s recent gains.

Lack of Primary Challenges for Harris Raises Questions

Without a formal primary process having led to her ascent, Democratic party elites have opted to back Harris directly after Biden announced stepping down. This move is criticized by some as negating around 14 million votes cast for Biden during the party's primary, sparking debates about the validity of Harris' rise.

Consensus among voters who would prefer another candidate, however, proved elusive. While 23% of respondents wished for a different nominee, a majority within this group had no specific alternative in mind, showcasing Harris' potentially strong positioning despite a fair amount of opposition.

CNN analyst Harry Enten addressed the poll results, emphasizing the shift in demographic dynamics saying:

Trump appeared to make inroads with the youngest demographic, making it difficult for Harris to perform as well as Biden. About three-quarters of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters (76%) say the Democratic Party should nominate Harris as its candidate for president, with only about 6% expressing support for any other specific person as the nominee.

Details on Voter Preferences Among Democrats

Though most within the party now support Harris, the poll detailed other preferences among Democratic voters. Names like Michelle Obama, Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, and others were mentioned, but none garnered significant support to challenge Harris' lead.

Regarding young voters, there has been a balanced shift between Republican and Democratic alignment since 2020, with both parties now holding an even 49% of the demographic, a stark difference from the 56-39% divide which formerly favored Democrats.

The results from this significant poll occurred directly after President Biden endorsed Harris, suggesting the campaign's direction and preparing the Democratic party for the upcoming election cycle without Biden at the helm.

Harris' Challenge in Winning Over Young Voters

While Harris has managed to slightly bolster Biden’s previous appeal among young voters, she may still have a way to go.

The detailed figures regarding young voters indicate an increasingly competitive landscape, signaling crucial areas in which the vice president might focus her campaign strategies.

With the 2024 election on the horizon, these poll results not only sketch a likely scenario for the Democratic nomination but also hint at the strategic dimensions with which Harris must contend. Overall, she emerges as a favorite within her party, but does so amid an admittedly nuanced electoral landscape that awaits her candidacy.

To sum up, a substantial proportion of Democratic-leaning voters rally behind Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election, though challenges remain among the youth demographic and those concerned about the process that brought her to this moment.. As the Democratic elite rally behind her, the upcoming months are crucial for Harris to cement her appeal across diverse voter bases, shaping her strategies to encompass the evolving political dynamics.
