CNN Flash Poll: Trump Seen as Better Debater Over Biden by Majority

 June 28, 2024

In the aftermath of a political showdown at CNN’s Atlanta studios on June 27, 2024, a significant majority of debate watchers felt that former President Donald Trump surpassed incumbent President Joe Biden in debate performance.

A CNN/SSRS poll revealed that 67% of registered voters who watched the debate believed Trump outshined Biden.

Despite pre-debate predictions slightly favoring Trump, the real-time reactions from the audience revealed a distinct lean towards the former president.

Among the viewers, 96% of Republicans endorsed Trump's performance, significantly overshadowing Biden's 69% approval among Democrats. This contrast highlighted a partisan split in perception that eclipsed the consensus.

Preference Does Not Equate Change in Voter Decision

While pivotal in showcasing the candidates' abilities, the debate seemingly did little to sway the overall election landscape. According to the CNN poll, the majority of 81% mentioned that their preference remained unchanged post-debate. This suggested a deeply entrenched voter base on both sides, leaving little room for shifts in allegiance.

Of the individuals who considered changing their vote, 14% reconsidered but ultimately maintained their initial choice, and only a minor 5% shifted their allegiance completely. This illustrates the hardcore loyalty of the electorate and the limited impact of debates on committed voters.

Interestingly, Trump's favorability ratings remained stable or showed slight increases after the debate, staying around 43%. On the other hand, Biden's numbers experienced a slight dip, with only 31% viewing him favorably post-debate, down from 37% previously. This could suggest waning confidence in Biden's leadership among the debate audience, potentially influenced by his performance on stage.

Flexibility Among Undecided Voters

While the debate may have had minimal influence on committed partisans, it played a more significant role among undecided voters. About 9% of previously undetermined viewers decided on a candidate after the debate, indicating that their performances were crucial for a small yet critical segment of the electorate.

In total, 25% of flexible voters were still weighing their options, reflecting the potential for shifts in voter sentiment as the election approaches. These changes among undecided voters could be pivotal, particularly in a tightly contested election landscape.

The CNN poll's methodology involved querying 565 U.S. registered voters who watched the debate, with a margin of error of ±5.5 percentage points. This poll reflected the immediate reactions post-debate and underlined the broader electoral dynamics with an over-representation of GOP-leaning individuals by 5 points.

Leadership Capabilities Debated Heavily

Scores about perceived presidential capabilities further delineated the divide. Eighty-five percent of Republican viewers felt Trump addressed these concerns adequately, whereas only 53% of Democrats felt similarly about Biden. This discrepancy points to differing expectations and satisfactions within party lines regarding what qualifies as presidential demeanor and capability. Despite this partisan approval, the cross-party dissatisfaction with Biden's handling of the presidency was notable.

The CNN poll results were summarized with a statement by the survey conductors: "Debate watchers say, 67% to 33%, that Trump turned in a better potential Thursday." Also noted was that "85% of GOP debate watchers credit Trump with doing more than his rival to address concerns about his ability to handle the presidency."

Partisan Perspectives on Candidate Performances

The CNN Flash Poll revealed that partisan views greatly impacted how the candidates' debate performances were perceived. Trump seemed to regain support among his base and some undecided voters, while Biden's performance bolstered confidence among his supporters and the general electorate. The findings suggest that while debates may not decide the entire election, they play a key role in shaping perceptions and potentially influencing undecided voters. As the 2024 presidential race continues, both candidates need to focus on persuading the undecided and keeping their base motivated and confident in their abilities.
