Clinton campaign's alleged plot to smear Trump exposed in declassified report

A bombshell annex to Special Counsel John Durham’s 2023 report, declassified just last Thursday, lays bare a disturbing scheme allegedly hatched by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to tie Donald Trump to Russian organized crime. This revelation paints a grim picture of political manipulation at the highest levels, raising serious questions about the integrity of our institutions.

According to the Washington Examiner, the 24-page document details intelligence from 2016 suggesting Clinton’s team planned to fabricate “scandalous revelations” about Trump’s supposed links to the “Russian Mafia” to shift focus from her email controversy. By July of that year, her operatives reportedly expected the FBI and media to run with this narrative, amplifying a story built on sand.

The annex, released under the direction of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, highlights how the FBI was tipped off to this potential scheme yet failed to dig deeper. It’s a glaring omission that reeks of either incompetence or something far worse, especially when trust in law enforcement is already on thin ice.

Early Warnings Ignored by FBI Leadership

A March 2016 memo explicitly referenced the Clinton campaign’s intent to create a distraction by linking Trump to shady Russian elements. FBI analysts even noted that mentions of “special services” in the memo could point to U.S. intelligence, law enforcement, or dossier author Christopher Steele.

On August 3, 2016, CIA Director John Brennan briefed top officials, including President Barack Obama and FBI Director James Comey, about this Clinton plan. Yet, just days earlier on July 31, the FBI launched Crossfire Hurricane, a counterintelligence probe into Trump based on flimsy grounds involving a campaign volunteer’s conversation.

The annex underscores that the FBI disregarded credible intelligence about the partisan roots of the Steele dossier and other materials. This isn’t just a missed step; it’s a deliberate sidestep around the truth that allowed a baseless investigation to spiral.

Misleading Courts and Altering Evidence

Between 2016 and 2017, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court was misled by the FBI to authorize surveillance on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The annex reveals that an FBI lawyer later pleaded guilty to altering a document to support a warrant renewal, a stunning breach of ethics.

Durham’s earlier 2023 report concluded that the FBI rushed into the Trump-Russia probe without solid evidence of collusion. Now, this annex doubles down, showing how the agency dismissed warnings about Clinton’s potential role without so much as a follow-up inquiry.

John Ratcliffe summed it up sharply: “This was a Hillary Clinton plan, but part of it was an FBI plan to be an accelerant to that fake Steele dossier … pouring oil on the fire, amplifying the lie, and burying the truth.” His words cut to the core of a system that seems all too willing to pick sides when it suits the narrative.

Intelligence Origins and Agency Complicity

The annex also suggests that emails and memos reviewed during Durham’s investigation were likely authentic, with some sourced from Russian hacking of U.S. think tanks. This adds a layer of irony: foreign interference may have fueled a domestic political hit job, and yet the FBI looked the other way.

Durham himself noted, “The FBI was fully alerted to the possibility that at least some of the information it was receiving about the Trump campaign might have its origin either with the Clinton campaign or its supporters, or alternatively, was the product of Russian disinformation.” If that’s not a red flag demanding action, then what is?

Grassley called the annex a window into “one of the biggest political scandals and cover-ups in American history,” accusing Obama and Biden administration agencies of weaponizing law enforcement against Trump. His charge isn’t easily dismissed when the evidence shows such blatant disregard for fairness.

A Call for Accountability and Reform

Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard collaborated with the CIA and NSA to bring this annex to light. Their efforts underscore a pressing need to peel back the curtain on past abuses before trust in these agencies erodes beyond repair.

The annex itself states, “Despite this awareness, the FBI appears to have dismissed the [intelligence information] as not credible without any investigative steps actually having been taken to either corroborate or disprove the allegations.” That’s not just negligence; it’s a choice to ignore inconvenient truths, and it demands real consequences.

What we’re left with is a stark reminder that power can corrupt the very systems meant to protect us. If we don’t demand accountability for these failures, we’re signing off on a future where political gamesmanship trumps justice every time.
