Cinemark is bringing back its popular “Bring Your Own Bucket” popcorn deal for one day only, letting moviegoers fill almost any clean container with popcorn for $5, a move the company says is driven by customer demand.

On Sunday, September 6, Cinemark theaters across the country are inviting customers to participate in a promotion that stands out in an era of rising concession prices and shrinking portions. For $5, customers can bring a clean container of their choice, no matter how unconventional, and have it filled with up to 400 ounces of popcorn, the equivalent of two extra-large servings.

The event, which Cinemark first introduced in January for National Popcorn Day, returns after what the company describes as overwhelming popularity. A USA TODAY report confirms that Cinemark is not requiring any additional purchase or app download to participate, keeping the offer simple and accessible.

Cinemark’s public relations manager, Julia McCartha, emphasized the company’s openness to customer creativity. “We have seen everything from a nightstand, a wheelbarrow, an urn, a guitar case, traffic cones, a pair of pants, and more,” McCartha told USA TODAY, describing the lengths some popcorn lovers have gone to maximize their treat. She said, “We welcome all types of containers, as long as they are clean.”

While Cinemark has set a 400-ounce upper limit for the popcorn fill, the event’s only real restriction is that containers must be clean, leaving the door open for everything from the practical to the ridiculous. The company has not specified which individual theaters are participating or any further rules about container size or shape, but the official event page outlines the $5 deal and basic conditions.

Popcorn deal brings moviegoers together in an uncertain economy

The return of Cinemark’s BYOB promotion is notable at a time when families are feeling squeezed by inflation and everyday outings have become more expensive. The offer lets customers enjoy a classic treat without the usual sticker shock that comes with concession stand prices. While it may be a lighthearted promotion, it also signals that at least one major entertainment company is listening when customers say they want better value for their hard-earned money.

By allowing customers to bring in nearly any kind of container, Cinemark is breaking from the usual playbook of tight corporate control and instead giving moviegoers a reason to have fun, and maybe even feel a little more in charge of their experience. From nightstands to guitar cases, the stories behind some containers may be as entertaining as the movies themselves.

Cinemark’s clean-container rule: common sense or common courtesy?

There is, of course, the matter of hygiene. Cinemark’s only rule is that containers must be clean, a reasonable and commonsense requirement. It keeps the promotion fun without turning the concession stand into a health hazard. There’s no need for an app download or bundled ticket, either, cutting out the usual corporate hoops that too often get in the way of a good deal.

Still, the lack of detail about which locations are participating and whether there are additional restrictions may leave some customers with questions. But for one day, at least, Cinemark is betting that a little trust, and a lot of popcorn, will bring people back to the movies.

In a world where corporations often nickel-and-dime customers, giving families a break at the popcorn stand is a rare move in the right direction.
