This Easter, the Christian community in Nigeria remains under severe threat from Islamist militants, with recent attacks heightening fears of genocide, Fox News reported.
The religious violence in Nigeria has seen a sharp rise, particularly affecting the Christian demographic, which constitutes 46% of the nation's populace. An alarming spree of assaults has been reported, notably from Islamist Fulani terrorists and other extremist groups, who first began their campaign of terror in 2001.
According to Jeff King, the president of International Christian Concern (ICC), these continuous attacks have transitioned into a scenario that resembles genocide. King has been vocal about the international community's need to intervene. Nigeria now occupies the seventh spot on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watchlist for countries where Christian persecution is most severe.
Salient among recent tragic events was the assault on April 2-3, 2025, in Bokkos County, Plateau State, where relentless militants killed over 60 Christians and set fire to 383 homes. Another devastating attack in the region before this had claimed 51 Christian lives.
The village of Zikke, near Jos, reeled from a ghastly attack following a Palm Sunday service, further amplifying the crisis as it left an additional 54 Christians dead.
