A dramatic shakeup in California's State Assembly has left five Republican representatives and one moderate Democrat without their committee assignments.
According to Breitbart, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) removed six Assembly members from their committee positions late Friday in what appears to be retaliation for their oversight efforts and bipartisan initiatives.
The purge targeted Republican Assembly members Alexandra Macedo of Tulare, David Tangipa of Clovis, Carl DeMaio of San Diego, Bill Essayli of Riverside, and Joe Patterson of Rocklin. Democratic Assembly member Maggy Krell of Sacramento was also removed from the Assembly Higher Education Committee, notably after her collaboration with Republicans on legislation aimed at combating minor sex trafficking.
The removal of DeMaio from two budget-related committees stands out as particularly contentious. The San Diego representative had been actively scrutinizing state spending practices and investigating potential misuse of tax dollars.
DeMaio's response to his committee removal highlighted his determination to continue his oversight work. He emphasized that the action would not deter his collaboration with outside investigators to expose what he describes as wasteful spending and corruption in Sacramento.
The Democratic supermajority in both the Assembly and State Senate has historically limited Republican influence in California's legislature. This power dynamic enables Democrats to pass legislation with minimal input from the minority party.
The committee reshuffling follows previous tensions along party lines. Essayli's removal from his position came after his strong opposition to Democratic initiatives regarding gender identity policies in schools.
Last year, Essayli attempted to strengthen minority party rights through proposed legislation. His efforts were unsuccessful, and the bill was defeated in a vote.
In response to his committee removal, Essayli released a statement to Breitbart. He said:
Being punished by Democrat tyrants in Sacramento is an indication Republicans are finally doing the right thing. They have been accustomed to a controlled opposition party that goes along to get along. Those days are over. Thanks to President Trump we have a new breed of conservatives who are ready to speak up, fight back, and win elections. They can take our committees, they can kill our bills, but we will never stop fighting for a better California.
The removal of Democratic Assembly member Krell demonstrates that even members of the majority party face consequences for working across party lines. Her collaboration with Republicans on anti-trafficking legislation preceded her removal from the Higher Education Committee.
