Ed Oliver, the Buffalo Bills' 28-year-old defensive tackle, is grieving the death of his 2-year-old son, a loss the team's front office called "an unthinkable tragedy for any parent."
Bills General Manager Brandon Beane released a statement expressing the organization's condolences as Oliver and his family cope with the devastating loss. The cause, location, and exact date of the child's death have not been disclosed publicly.
ESPN and NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe first reported the news, citing a source close to Oliver who said the seven-year Bills veteran is asking for "privacy and prayers at this very difficult time."
Beane's full statement made clear the Bills intend to stand behind their longtime defensive anchor:
"On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."
Oliver had missed Thursday's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns. First-year Bills head coach Joe Brady attributed the absence to an unspecified injury. It remains unclear whether that explanation was related to the family tragedy or to a separate physical issue.
The situation is still developing, and neither the team nor Oliver's representatives have provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the boy's death.
Buffalo selected Oliver with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He has spent all seven of his professional seasons with the franchise, establishing himself as a fixture on the defensive line.
Last season was a difficult one on the field. Oliver appeared in just three games before an ankle injury sidelined him. A torn biceps followed, requiring surgery in late October 2025. His recovery from that procedure had been a storyline heading into training camp before this far greater loss overshadowed everything else.
No parent should ever have to bury a child. Whatever comes next for Oliver on the football field is a question for another day, for now, the man deserves exactly what he asked for: privacy, and prayers.
