Border Patrol's Operation Blitz Yields Key Arrests in Chicago

 September 21, 2025, NEWS

In a swift display of federal muscle, U.S. Border Patrol agents nabbed two migrants in suburban Mount Prospect, Illinois, as part of a broader crackdown dubbed Operation Midway Blitz.

NewsNation reported that this operation, under the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) guidance, has already led to over 400 arrests in the Chicago area since last week, targeting individuals deemed high-priority threats while stirring up a storm of local protest and criticism.

The arrests in Mount Prospect unfolded on Thursday, quick as a flash, following a routine traffic stop that took less than five minutes.

Targeted Arrests Highlight Federal Precision

One of the men, a Mexican national with a prior felony conviction for counterfeiting, was the primary target, according to DHS reports, showing that the operation isn't just casting a wide net but aiming for specific bad actors.

The second man, apprehended as a collateral arrest for allegedly staying in the U.S. without authorization, complied without incident alongside his counterpart, proving that not every encounter needs to be a Hollywood showdown.

Both individuals are now in federal custody awaiting immigration proceedings, a reminder that the long arm of the law doesn't take weekends off.

Local Police Left in the Dark

Mount Prospect police, via a late Thursday social media post, made it clear they had no heads-up about federal agents operating in their backyard, a fact that raises eyebrows about coordination between local and federal levels.

Under the Illinois Trust Act, local law enforcement is barred from joining immigration enforcement efforts, though they’ve stated they won’t obstruct federal operations—a delicate dance of jurisdiction if there ever was one.

It's no surprise, then, that Mount Prospect police noted they’re rarely, if ever, tipped off by agencies like Border Patrol before such actions take place.

Operation Midway Blitz Sparks Controversy

Operation Midway Blitz isn’t just a local affair; it’s a coordinated push involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection, and other federal entities, ramping up their presence around Chicago to tackle what DHS calls priority targets.

Border Patrol Assistant Chief Max Lopez praised the effort, saying, “Agents today proved what can happen when you do your homework.” But let’s be honest—while the execution might be seamless, the optics of federal agents swooping into suburban neighborhoods have left many residents rattled.

The operation has ignited protests across Chicago and its suburbs, with a notable demonstration on Friday at a suburban ICE processing center, showing that not everyone is rolling out the welcome mat for DHS.

Community Tensions Rise Amid Federal Presence

Neighborhoods in Chicago are on high alert, some even distributing whistles to signal the presence of federal officers—a creative, if somewhat quaint, pushback against what many see as overreach.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and other local leaders have voiced sharp criticism, particularly over reports of masked federal officers making arrests without clear identification or warrants, a concern that deserves a fair hearing even if one supports tougher border policies.

Meanwhile, DHS has doubled down, stating they’ll stay in the greater Chicago area until their mission is complete, with local lawmakers estimating the operation could stretch up to 45 days—a timeline that promises more tension before resolution.
