'Big Tech Embraces Trump Post-2024 Victory'

 December 23, 2024

Following the recent political shakeup, major tech firms are seemingly realigning their focus.

In the aftermath of Donald Trump's 2024 reelection, big technology companies and their chief executives, who once resisted him, are now engaging positively, foreseeing an era of less restrictive policies compared to those promised by the Biden administration, the Daily Caller reported.

After initially opposing Trump after his first presidential victory, tech giants sang a different tune after his return to the White House. Leaders from Google, Meta, and Amazon have all adjusted their approaches conspicuously.

Bridging the Policy Gap: Tech Leaders in Dialogue with Trump

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and its founder Sergei Brin, who had protested Trump’s earlier immigration policies, found grounds for a constructive dialogue at Mar-a-Lago following the 2024 election results. This marked a notable shift from their previous confrontational stance.

Meanwhile, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, alongside other tech leaders, contributed financially to Trump’s inaugural fund, signaling broader support within the sector. Elon Musk, the influential CEO known for leading Tesla and SpaceX, openly endorsed Trump during the election campaign, a move that paved the way for others in the industry to follow suit.

Big Tech's Regulatory Concerns Under Biden

The shift in support comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny under the Biden Administration. Meta, Amazon, Apple, and Google were all subjects of antitrust lawsuits, a clear signal of the administration's stringent policy stance on competition in the tech industry.

Moreover, tech investments have been influenced by policies around cryptocurrencies with the Biden Administration imposing heavy restrictions. In contrast, Trump's pro-crypto stance, including nominating a pro-crypto SEC chair, Paul Atkins, led to an increase in cryptocurrency stocks. Joel Thayer, an industry analyst, highlighted this regulatory about-face as a major reason for the tech community's renewed support.

“They said, ‘Look, AI is a technology basically that the government is going to completely control,'" noted Marc Andreessen, a prominent tech investor, expressing concerns about the Biden Administration's approach towards artificial intelligence regulation.

This growing alignment with Trump has been vocalized by major tech figures. Tim Cook of Apple and Jeff Bezos of Amazon publicly congratulated Trump on his reelection, which Bezos described as an "extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory." Furthermore, Amazon has made significant adjustments in its corporate practices, including revising content policies on sensitive topics such as transgender issues and COVID-19 vaccines.

New Opportunities Under Trump's Administration

There are hints that Trump might reconsider some of his initially stringent stances. For instance, the reconsideration of banning TikTok, previously labeled a national security threat, is now on the table under this new term.

Industry experts believe that tech companies could be making these overtures to Trump as strategic moves. “Every company is going to want to just talk to the leaders and see how things are going to shape up and potentially even influence some of those policies,” said Joel Thayer, pointing out the desire amongst tech executives to guide policy direction beneficial to their operations.

In reflecting on the recent political developments and tech industry reactions, Marc Andreessen remarked on the radical nature of the previous administration, especially concerning tech policy. “I don’t think there’s been an administration this radical on economic and tech policy I don’t think in like — ever,” he said.

In conclusion, the transition in the political landscape has brought about a significant shift in the relationship between the tech industry and the U.S. government. As big tech juggernauts aim to influence and adapt to new policies, the interaction between these massive industries and political power promises to shape the regulatory and economic environment significantly.
