Rep. James Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, did not sugarcoat the situation. He highlighted two fundamental questions directed at the witness: whether someone had instructed O’Connor to lie about Biden’s health and whether O’Connor personally believed Biden was unfit to perform the duties of the presidency.
Comer said O’Connor invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to both questions. “That’s unprecedented,” Comer remarked, suggesting that O’Connor’s evasive stance only heightens concerns about a possible cover-up inside the West Wing.
Statements from Dr. O’Connor’s legal team attempted to reframe the silence as a principled refusal rather than an admission, arguing that the committee’s decision not to honor doctor-patient confidentiality left their client with little choice.

As a former criminal defense attorney, she aimed at critics who view the Fifth Amendment as a red flag for guilt, reminding the public that due process includes protecting medical professionals under scrutiny.
She also pointed to an ongoing Justice Department investigation involving O’Connor, implying that the timing of this federal probe justified extra caution. That’s a lot of government muscle circling one doctor—hardly business as usual.
Comer doesn’t seem inclined to let the matter slide. After the brief session ended, the chairman reaffirmed the committee’s plans to keep digging, with more interviews and depositions still ahead. He emphasized the panel's commitment to being “transparent with the media and the American people.”
So far, the committee has already heard from at least one former senior Biden aide, Neera Tanden, and more are lined up. The picture emerging isn’t pretty, and O’Connor’s silence only serves to cloud an already murky timeline surrounding the president’s health disclosures.
O’Connor and his legal team exited the Capitol without answering press inquiries, for the second time that day, keeping the public in the dark. Meanwhile, speculation continues to mount about what, exactly, the president’s staff may have been shielding from view.
Comer made it plain: “Most people invoke the Fifth when they have criminal liability.” While that may be a broad brush, it’s tough to dispute that the doctor’s wordless testimony sends a signal. “His actions today speak loud and clear,” Comer added, in a sentiment shared by many Americans who are watching this saga unfold with growing skepticism.
Yes, the Constitution protects individual rights. But the public also deserves clear answers when questions arise about the mental and physical condition of a sitting president. Leaders cannot hide national leadership behind a black box sealed with claims of privilege.
In the end, a physician who refuses to say whether his patient—a president—is capable of executing his duties doesn’t calm the nation’s nerves. It just raises one more unsettling question: if there’s nothing to hide, why all the silence?
