Joe Biden and Democrats are not happy right now regarding a recent decision that came down via an Alabama court.
The ruling was that embryos created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) are now considered children, and it is not sitting well with the left.
Talking Points…
- Alabama IVF ruling
- Biden’s response
- Analysis
In the ruling, the court referenced the state constitution, which covers abortion. There is an 1872 statute that gives parents the right to sue over the wrongful death of a minor, and this includes “unborn children,” with no exception for “extrauterine children.”
Chief Justice Tom Parker, in his decision, stated:
“Even before birth, all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory.”
Resolve’s president and chief executive, Barbara Collura, believes this could impact parents using IVF to help with pregnancy negatively. She stated:
“You’ve changed the status of a microscopic group of cells to now being a person or a child.
“They didn’t say in vitro fertilization is illegal, and they didn’t say that you can’t freeze embryos. It’s even worse — there is no road map.”
Dr. Paula Amato, the president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, added:
“The court held that a fertilized frozen egg in a fertility clinic freezer should be treated as the legal equivalent of an existent child or a fetus gestating in a womb.
“Science and everyday common sense tell us they are not.”
Needless to say, Democrats get upset about anything that protects newborn life, so this decision did not sit well with anyone in the administration. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Vice President Kamala Harris left blistering comments about the ruling, as did Joe Biden, who stated:
“Today, in 2024 in America, women are being turned away from emergency rooms and forced to travel hundreds of miles for health care, while doctors fear prosecution for providing an abortion.
“And now, a court in Alabama put access to some fertility treatments at risk for families who are desperately trying to get pregnant. The disregard for women’s ability to make these decisions for themselves and their families is outrageous and unacceptable.
“Make no mistake: this is a direct result of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.”
Democrats have used abortion to crush Republicans in the last three elections, and you better believe this will be front and center again in the 2024 cycle. Remember, we were supposed to have a red wave in both 2020 and 2022, but Republicans fell significantly short of expectations in both races. With Biden struggling in polling, Democrats will hope to get him some grip on polling by putting this at the forefront of the election, which will force Trump to take a stance on abortion. If he goes too extreme, he loses moderates. If he does not go far enough, he will lose votes on the right. This is exactly why Republicans need to focus on settling this issue once and for all if they can retake the Senate, keep the House, and win the White House.
