Biden Maintains Narrow Lead Over Trump Despite Debate Criticisms

 July 12, 2024

In a current NPR/PBS News/Marist College poll, President Joe Biden continues to outperform former President Donald Trump slightly amongst registered voters for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

The New York Post reported that despite a contentious debate performance and mounting internal pressures, recent polls still depict Biden as the favored candidate over Trump.

Recent findings from the survey indicate that President Joe Biden hosts a 2% edge over Trump, garnering 50% of support versus Trump's 48%, with the remaining 2% of voters undecided.

If President Biden opts not to pursue reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris has shown she might uphold this narrow lead, scoring 50% to Trump’s 49% in potential matchups.

Other Democrats, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, are also performing competitively against Trump in theoretical scenarios. These results highlight the tight race expected as the election approaches, suggesting any leading Democratic contenders might hold their ground against Trump.

Pressure Mounts on Biden for 2024 Candidacy

During a debate on June 27, 2024, critics noted President Biden's less-than-stellar performance. This sparked debate within his party regarding his viability as the candidate for the upcoming election. Despite these concerns, internal polls by Biden’s campaign team reveal that many still back him as their candidate, albeit with tightened scrutiny and evaluations.

Congressman Jim Himes from Connecticut has openly voiced his apprehensions regarding Biden's candidacy:

The 2024 election will define the future of American democracy, and it’s crucial to nominate the most robust possible candidate to face Trump's promised MAGA authoritarianism. Regrettably, I have come to doubt that Joe Biden is the fitting candidate for this formidable task.

At a NATO summit press conference, an embarrassing slip occurred when President Biden mistakenly referred to Kamala Harris as "Vice President Trump." This blunder has fueled further narratives about his potentially waning competency in public engagements.

Harris Gains Support Amidst Biden's Uncertainty

Following pressures on Biden, Vice President Kamela Harris's viability as a successor gains momentum. Internal discussions and polls within the Biden campaign are increasingly evaluating Harris's potential to take on Trump if Biden steps down. Congressman Jared Huffman from California is showing strong support for Harris, acknowledging her as a prime candidate if Biden were to pass the torch.

VP Harris is on fire. She’s vetted, tested, and has been Democrats’ strongest messenger throughout this campaign. She’s the next in line if needed, and when/if the time comes for President Biden to pass the torch, I’m all-in for Kamala Harris.

The campaign trails have been bustling with activity, underpinning the escalating tension and excitement as the election draws nearer. On July 9, 2024, Trump hosted a significant rally at Trump National Doral Miami, which saw a large turnout. Vice President Harris was not far behind, speaking at a campaign event in Greensboro, North Carolina, just two days later, where she championed the Democratic vision for the future.

Despite the incumbent president’s leading position in the polls, a six-way hypothetical race puts Trump slightly ahead with 43%, Biden trailing by a narrow margin at 42%. This suggests a competitive and possibly unpredictable race ahead.

In conclusion, while President Biden leads against Donald Trump in the polls, the margin remains narrow, and internal debates within the Democratic Party continue to put his candidacy under scrutiny. With Vice President Kamala Harris ready to step up if needed, the Democratic Party is at a crucial juncture, ensuring they present a strong contender against Trump’s bid for re-election.
