Barack and Michelle Obama trade anniversary tributes after divorce speculation

Barack and Michelle Obama marked 34 years of marriage with warm Instagram posts Saturday, after a stretch of public divorce speculation the couple has tried to bat down.

Former President Barack Obama, 65, shared a photo of the couple embracing, with Michelle resting a hand on his arm as he looked at her. Page Six reported the Saturday messages landed as they reached 34 years since their Oct. 3, 1992 wedding.

Barack Obama wrote:

"Happy anniversary, @MichelleObama! I'm still the luckiest guy in the world to be with you,"

Michelle Obama, 62, the former first lady and author of "Becoming," posted a montage of photos and videos set to Stevie Wonder's 1976 hit "As." The reel mixed 1992 wedding throwbacks, White House moments, and vacation and public-event snapshots.

Michelle Obama wrote:

"Loving you just keeps getting better and better! Happy anniversary, @BarackObama. Here's to many, many more years of joy, laughter, and memories to come. 💕"

The couple also shares daughters Malia, 28, and Sasha, 25. Last year they marked 33 years online with similar praise, including Barack calling the marriage the best decision he ever made and Michelle saying she loved him even more than the day they said "I do."

Polished anniversary content is familiar terrain for a pair that still guards Barack Obama's post-presidency clout with care.

Empty seats at big events fed months of divorce talk

The soft focus landed after a rough run of optics. Last year, Barack attended Jimmy Carter's funeral without Michelle at his side. He also attended President Donald Trump's inauguration alone.

Page Six previously described Michelle's inauguration skip as "deliberate." A source said she was on an "extended holiday vacation" in Hawaii. The separate public schedules poured fuel on divorce chatter.

In July 2025, the couple addressed that noise on the "IMO" podcast with Michelle's brother and co-host, Craig Robinson, 64. Robinson joked about the "rumor mill" and asked, "Wait, you guys like each other?"

Barack quipped, "She took me back! It was touch and go for a while." Michelle told him not to "start," said it was simply "nice to [be] in the same room," and noted that when they are apart, "folks think we're divorced."

Image repair is easier than the sharper fights still attached to Obama's public legacy in institutions and politics.

Michelle casts the marriage as a safety net

More recently, Michelle told People the marriage held through "ups and downs." She said the through-line was trust in her husband.

Michelle Obama said:

"However hard it's been, the ups and the downs, he's got me,"

She added that Barack pushes her to try new things and "go leap," and that she can take those risks because she knows he will catch her if she slips, falls, or trips.

Saturday's posts stuck to that same script: public affection, curated memory, and no daylight for the rumor cycle.

It is softer fare than his ongoing policy tour, and far easier for loyal fans to applaud on cue.

Fans get another round of staged devotion. Taxpayers still live with the governing record that made the brand powerful in the first place.
