Arson Incident at Senator's Office Leads to Federal Charges

 April 7, 2024

A dramatic event has unfolded in Burlington, Vermont, drawing nationwide attention.

A man has been charged federally after attempting to set fire to Senator Bernie Sanders' office, endangering staff members inside.

According to VT Digger News, Shant Soghomonian, 35, faces charges of intentionally setting a fire and was arrested two days after the incident. The attack involved a liquid accelerant and a lighter, and it momentarily endangered the lives of several staff members of Senator Sanders by trapping them. Importantly, Sanders was not at the location at the time.

Soghomonian, also known as Michael Soghomonian, currently faces serious legal repercussions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont said he is charged with using fire to damage a building involved in interstate commerce.

The gravity of this crime could see him facing a substantial period behind bars, ranging from five to twenty years, in addition to a possible $250,000 fine.

The Harrowing Event Caught on Security Footage

Security cameras outside the office recorded the chilling scene as Soghomonian deployed the accelerant and ignited it, creating an immediate fire hazard. The rapid spread of the blaze, intended or otherwise, blocked an exit, amplifying the peril for those trapped inside. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, which has been met with widespread relief.

In response to these events, Senator Bernie Sanders released a statement underscoring his gratitude towards the swift action of law enforcement agencies and the support from the community:

I am deeply grateful to the swift, professional, coordinated efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement in response to the fire at my Vermont office on Friday. I am also thankful that none of the many people who were in the office building at the time of the fire were injured. We will continue to serve Vermonters during these challenging times.

Despite the arrest, no court date for Soghomonian has been announced, leaving many awaiting further developments. This case not only highlights the immediate dangers posed by such acts of arson but also the broader implications for public safety and the security of political figures.

A Community United in Response

Originally from Northridge, California, Soghomonian's motives remain a subject of speculation and investigation. The U.S. Attorney's Office detailed the security footage, pivotal in Soghomonian's apprehension, capturing him as he "sprayed a liquid near the outer door [of Sanders’ office] and then lighting the area with a handheld lighter," before hastily exiting the scene.

This incident has prompted a wave of support for Senator Sanders and his staff from local communities and nationwide. Sanders' acknowledgment of this solidarity and his commitment to continuing his work underscores his resilience in the face of adversity.

As the case against Shant Soghomonian progresses, it is a stark reminder of public servants' potential dangers and the importance of robust security measures. The collective response from law enforcement and the public highlights a shared commitment to safety and justice.

In conclusion, the incident at Senator Bernie Sanders' office stands as a significant event, prompting federal charges against Shant Soghomonian for arson. His actions, which put several lives at risk, have led to a unified response from the community and law enforcement. As the legal proceedings unfold, the resilience and solidarity shown by all involved will remain a focal point of this case.
