An arrest has been made linking a man to a fire in Los Angeles believed to have been set intentionally.
According to Newsweek, a quick response from residents led to the capture of the suspect who is alleged to have ignited the devastating Kenneth fire in the Woodland Hills neighborhood.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the detention of a suspect who they say is a homeless man in his 30s, responsible for the Kenneth fire in the San Fernando Valley which ignited on Thursday afternoon.
The blaze rapidly consumed more than 1,000 acres and prompted extensive evacuations.
According to Officer Charles Dinsel, the arrest occurred roughly 30 minutes after the fire was reported. He described the sequence of events where the suspect was subdued by local citizens. "What we know right now is that the incident occurred, started here and about 20 minutes, 30 minutes later, a suspect was detained over in the Woodland Hills area by citizens," said Officer Dinsel.
The area around Victory Trailhead where the fire began is currently a designated crime scene as part of the ongoing arson investigation, reinforcing beliefs that the fire was a result of intentional acts.
Meanwhile, firefighters are striving to manage the outbreak of multiple large wildfires across Los Angeles, which have been intensified by dry conditions and the Santa Ana winds. These fires have resulted in significant destruction, claiming at least 10,000 structures including homes, and leading to at least 10 fatalities thus far.
The scale of the fires triggered tens of thousands of evacuations, underlining the severity of the situation.
One witness, Renata Grinshpun, described a tense scene that led to the suspect's detention: "We were sitting in the backyard and suddenly, we hear a car come to a screeching halt and the guy is running out saying, 'Stop! Drop what you're holding! Neighbors, he's trying to start a fire! Call 911!"
The identity of the suspect remains undisclosed as the investigation proceeds. The LAPD is cautious about confirming the suspect's connection to this or any other fire in the region pending further investigation.
Despite the turmoil, there's a glimmer of hope as Governor Gavin Newsom noted progress in the firefighting efforts. "The #KennethFire is 1,000 acres and now 35 percent contained. The forward rate of spread has been stopped. Grateful for the heroic firefighters from Los Angeles and Ventura counties who are actively engaged on the scene, deploying both ground crews and aerial resources," stated the governor.
The suspect's motive remains under investigation as officials work to piece together the events that led up to the catastrophic fires.
