Arizona Senate Candidate Tragically Dies in DUI Crash

 November 16, 2024

An Arizona Senate candidate's life ended abruptly following a vehicle collision in Tucson.

Democratic candidate John McLean was killed when another driver allegedly impaired by alcohol ignored a traffic signal and crashed into his car, Fox News reported.

John McLean, aged 68, was seeking the District 17 seat in the Arizona Senate. His campaign ceased tragically early Friday morning when he was involved in a deadly car accident. Authorities reported that Michael Martin Creel, 27, allegedly failed to stop at a traffic signal, colliding with McLean's vehicle.

Creel is now in custody at the Pima County Jail on charges of manslaughter and aggravated DUI. It was noted by the police that both speeding and substance impairment were central factors in this fatal incident. This comes after Creel previously had a DUI case dismissed in December of last year.

Community Mourns McLean’s Untimely Death

John McLean was pronounced dead at the crash site, cutting short both his political aspirations and his dedication to public service. In response, the Arizona Senate Democrats acknowledged his passing, recognizing his commitment to bettering the state. “We extend our deepest sympathies to John’s family and loved ones,” they expressed, underlining his final days of dedication.

Meanwhile, McLean, the Democratic hopeful, was competing against Republican Vince Leach. With more than 3,000 votes trailing him, McLean conceded the election less than 24 hours prior to the tragic crash. His last public remarks reflected pride in the collective efforts driving his campaign.

The police investigation into the crash remains active. Their continued work seeks to piece together the events leading to the collision, ensuring all aspects are thoroughly examined and addressed.

Reactions from Peers and Political Figures

State Sen. Mitzi Epstein recalled her recent conversation with McLean, highlighting his unwavering optimism about Arizona and the selfless dedication he brought to his campaign. Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs emphasized McLean’s deep care for the state and his community.

Arizona Senate Democrats: "We are heartbroken to hear about the passing of LD17 Senate Candidate John McLean. He spent his final days fighting for a better Arizona and we could not be more thankful for his work and dedication to our great state. We extend our deepest sympathies to John’s family and loved ones."

Republican Vince Leach also conveyed his condolences to McLean’s family. "My deepest condolences go out to John’s family and friends in this most difficult time," Leach said, emphasizing respect for McLean’s honorable conduct throughout the campaign.

Honoring the Legacy of John McLean

Governor Hobbs expressed sorrow and acknowledged McLean's legacy as a dedicated public servant. His contributions to his community, driven by what he believed was best for Arizona, will be remembered by many. “This is a tragic loss, and my heart breaks for his family and loved ones,” said Hobbs.

As the investigation continues, the community reels from the loss of a dedicated advocate for progressive change. McLean’s untimely death underscores the grave consequences of impaired driving, bringing to light previous incidents that question systemic failures in addressing repeat offenses.

Community members and state leaders alike will gather strength from McLean’s work and dedication. His story serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of life and the value of adhering to the laws that ensure public safety. McLean’s commitment and optimism will remain a beacon in Arizona’s journey to a hopeful future.
