Hold onto your hats, folks—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the fiery 35-year-old House Representative, is trouncing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a hypothetical New York Democratic primary, according to a stunning new poll.
According to the New York Post, A recent survey by Honan Strategy Group for the Jewish Voters Action Network shows AOC leading Schumer 54% to 33% among likely Democratic voters, with even Jewish Democrats favoring her 45% to 33%.
This poll, conducted May 15-18, 2025, with 1,136 Democrats and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.89 points, reveals a seismic shift in a state where Schumer, now 74, has leaned on Jewish voter support throughout his 50-year career.
Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the nation, seems to be losing ground on his home turf, and it’s not hard to see why.
AOC, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has taken bold stances, including calling Israel’s response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, a “genocide,” while pushing for boycott and divestment policies against Israel.
Meanwhile, Schumer’s actions—like his Senate floor criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and call for new elections in Israel—have left some of his base scratching their heads, wondering if he’s trying to outflank the progressive wing or just misreading the room.
Adding fuel to the fire, Schumer has faced heat for not passing the Antisemitism Awareness Act during his tenure as Senate Majority Leader, a bill that would have strengthened federal tools to combat discrimination using a widely recognized definition of antisemitism.
Critics also point to a House report suggesting Schumer advised Columbia University to downplay antisemitism allegations—a claim he fiercely denies—but the accusation sticks like glue in the public mind.
“The leading Jewish elected official in the nation did not step up in a moment of rising antisemitism,” said Maury Litwack of Jewish Voters Action Network, and this poll seems to echo that frustration loud and clear.
Litwack didn’t hold back, stating, “This is a massive wake-up call for Schumer,” and he’s right—turns out, actions (or inaction) have consequences.
Even Schumer’s March 2025 vote for a six-month government funding bill drew ire from liberal activists who demanded he step down as Senate Democratic leader, showing he’s caught between appeasing the left and maintaining his traditional base.
“A partial shutdown would have wrought devastation,” Schumer defended, but for many, the justification falls flat when trust is already on thin ice.
With Schumer not up for reelection until 2028, this hypothetical matchup might seem like a distant thunderclap, but it’s a stark warning of shifting tides within the Democratic Party.
AOC’s appeal to younger, more progressive voters contrasts sharply with Schumer’s long-standing establishment image, and as Litwack noted, “He’s not only bleeding support in the Democratic Party overall but also in the Jewish community.”
While Schumer has written about antisemitism in a book, the criticism remains that his policies haven’t matched his prose—perhaps it’s time for the Senator to turn the page and rethink his approach before this poll becomes a prophecy.
