The operation resulted in the apprehension of five suspects, with two more individuals detained. Among those arrested were Jose Francisco Barrientos Vega, 24, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, and Alexis Segundo Olivo Fernandez, 44, who authorities believe is affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang.
Sheriff Javier Salazar emphasized the significance of the joint operation between his department's organized crime unit and the Border Patrol's Laredo Sector intelligence branch. The operation targeted two locations in San Antonio: one on West Avenue and another on Oriole Lane. Mary Lou Tula, 49, a U.S. citizen, was arrested alongside Brandon German Suarez, 25, and Bryan Jordan Suarez, 19, both believed to be American citizens.
Sheriff Salazar detailed the financial scope of the operation, stating:
This case goes back to 2023. These folks have associations with organizations that are responsible for upwards of a million dollars in seized cash.
A sixth suspect also believed to be connected to the Tren de Aragua gang, was detained separately and transferred to Border Patrol custody for processing and removal. This individual was not directly linked to the human smuggling operation but raised concerns about the gang's growing presence in the region.
The smuggling operation had been consistently moving between five and fifteen undocumented immigrants weekly into the United States. The criminal enterprise demonstrated sophisticated methods to evade detection while maintaining a steady flow of human trafficking.
Law enforcement officials are particularly concerned about the involvement of Tren de Aragua members, as it indicates the Venezuelan gang's expanding influence in U.S.-based criminal activities.
The suspects face multiple charges, including smuggling of persons, operating a stash house, and engaging in organized criminal activity. Brandon German Suarez and Bryan Jordan Suarez face additional charges for drug possession, though their connection to the smuggling operation remains unclear.
