Brooklyn subway knife attack cuts 68-year-old woman’s face amid climbing transit assaults

A 70-year-old man cut a 68-year-old woman’s face with a knife at a Brooklyn subway station Saturday, as felony assaults on New York City transit climbed 12 percent this year.

The confrontation broke out around 9 a.m. on the mezzanine level of the Sheepshead Bay B and Q station. A man in a hoodie held an emergency exit door open, got into a brief dispute with the elderly rider, then pressed a knife to her face and cut her until she bled.

He fled on the southbound Q train. NYPD Transit 34th district officers later took a person of interest into custody, with charges pending. The woman refused medical help at the scene. The attack lands against a clear rise in subway violence and a drop in transit arrests citywide.

Police described a short run-in at the exit door that turned bloody in seconds. The 70-year-old suspect held the blade against the 68-year-old rider’s face, opened a cut, and left her bleeding on the mezzanine before boarding the train and leaving the station.

Officers from the transit district moved on a person of interest afterward. Authorities said charges were pending. The victim stayed at the scene long enough to refuse care and walk away without an ambulance ride.

Door dispute turns into a face cutting

The New York Post reported the sequence from police: the man kept the emergency exit open, clashed with the woman, then used the knife at close range. No motive beyond that dispute made it into the official account.

No names of the rider or the suspect were released. No specific charge sheet was listed while the case sat in the pending stage. What police did put on the record was simple and ugly, a senior citizen cut in the face over a door argument before morning rush fully settled in.

The Q train that carried the attacker out also rolled back into Sheepshead Bay later that Saturday, a normal piece of service after an abnormal crime on the mezzanine above the tracks.

Felony subway assaults are up 12 percent

NYPD figures through Oct. 13 show felony assault in the city’s transit system at 525 so far this year, up from 470 over the same stretch last year, a 12 percent jump. Misdemeanor assault rose 16 percent, to 1,304 from 1,120.

Police also put the longer arc on paper. Felony assault is up 18 percent from two years ago and 94 percent from seven years ago. Misdemeanor assaults are up 11 percent over two years and 25 percent over seven years. The department did not publish the raw counts for those older windows, only the percentages.

Overall transit crime is up 2 percent year to date. Arrests in the system are down 5 percent, to 22,847 from 23,977 at the same point last year.

Serious assaults across New York City’s transit network have climbed in lockstep with that felony number. Cops framed the Sheepshead Bay cutting against that backdrop: more riders getting hurt, fewer people getting cuffed for the violence that produces those injuries.

A knife to an elderly woman’s face at an exit door is not an abstract percentage. It is one more felony-level attack in a system already running ahead of last year’s pace and far ahead of the levels logged several years back.

Custody came; the injury was already done

Transit officers did take a 70-year-old man in a hoodie into custody after the escape on the southbound Q. That step matters. It does not erase the cut, the blood, or the choice the victim made to refuse treatment on the spot and keep moving.

The gap in the data is hard to miss. Assault counts are higher. Arrest totals are lower. A 68-year-old rider paid for that gap with a blade across the face on a Brooklyn mezzanine while the city still debates how safe the trains feel.

Riders should not need luck and a refused ambulance to finish a Saturday morning trip. When assaults climb and arrests fall, the people stuck on the platform absorb the cost first.
