State Department confirms Kristi Noem is out as Shield of the Americas envoy

Kristi Noem is no longer the Trump administration’s special envoy to the Shield of the Americas coalition, the State Department confirmed, after what she called a six-month appointment.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Noem’s time in the envoy post has ended, while making clear she is not leaving the department. He spoke Thursday evening in an interview with NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer.

The Hill reported that Pigott framed the change as the natural end of the role, not a rupture with the administration’s work on the initiative.

Pigott told Meyer the post had simply run its course.

"We've seen the secretary's time as envoy expire,"

He added that Noem remains inside the building in a senior post.

"She continues to be at the State Department as a senior adviser."

Noem called the envoy post a six-month job

Noem addressed the change herself in a statement shared on X. She said the special envoy position was “always a six-month appointment.”

CBS News was first to report that she was no longer in the envoy role. The State Department’s on-record comments then locked in the basic fact: the envoy title is gone, and the senior adviser title stays.

Pigott did not spell out a deeper reason for the timing. He cast the move as ordinary turnover in these posts and said the department’s direction has not changed.

"There's always these types of changes that happen,"

He went further on the administration’s priorities.

"This is part of what's happening with these positions. But, certainly, we remain dedicated to implementing the president's agenda across the board."

Pigott also said Noem would keep working on the Shield of the Americas initiative in her adviser role. He declined to give specifics on that work.

Trump moved her to the envoy role after DHS

President Trump announced Noem for the newly created Shield of the Americas envoy post after she left her job as Homeland Security secretary in March. The coalition and initiative were set up under the current administration, and Noem was the public face of that envoy slot from the start of the assignment.

Her Homeland Security tenure ended amid hard-edged immigration enforcement and the political fight that followed. Reporting on that period has pointed to fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis after enforcement operations. House Democrats also opened an investigation in March into Corey Lewandowski, a former adviser tied to the department and to scrutiny of his association with Noem.

None of that background changes what the State Department said this week. The envoy clock ran out. Noem says that was the design. She is still at State as a senior adviser and, per Pigott, still tied to the Shield of the Americas effort.

Personnel titles move. The border and the hemisphere do not get easier because a six-month label expires.
