Minnehaha County Deputy Katherine Frank, 26, died Monday after three days in critical condition from a Sioux Falls confrontation that left a suspect facing attempted murder charges.

Gunfire erupted Friday night about 30 minutes after deputies arrived at a home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Deputy Katherine Frank was critically wounded at the scene. She spent three days in critical condition before dying Monday, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Fox News Digital reported that Frank’s death was recorded as Oct. 12, 2026, and that she became an organ donor. Suspect Brandon John Oetken, 39, of Sioux Falls, was also wounded in the confrontation and treated before being taken into custody.

Oetken faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Jail records also list a felony offense of disarming a law enforcement officer. He remained in custody without bond Tuesday morning.

It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors planned to file additional charges after Frank’s death. The Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s Office was contacted for more information about the shooting and the charges.

Frank built a short career in South Dakota corrections and patrol

Frank joined the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024. Before that, she worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary beginning in September 2022. She was 26 years old.

Her service was brief by career standards. The loss landed hard on the people who worked with her.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office said:

"Deputy Frank's death is a significant loss to our agency and to the broader law enforcement community in and around Sioux Falls."

The office also said she served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility, and dedication, and that her absence will be felt deeply by those who worked alongside her.

In a further statement, the sheriff’s office added:

"Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always."

Attorney general marks the death as a line-of-duty sacrifice

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley paid tribute after the deputy’s death. His office also noted the shooting was the fifth involving law enforcement officers in South Dakota this year.

Jackley said:

"We mourn the loss of Minnehaha County Sheriff's Deputy Katherine Frank, who sacrificed everything in the line of duty to keep us safe. Let us never forget her courage and the service of all of our law enforcement officers. Deputy Frank and her family remain in our prayers."

Jackley had previously said investigators would review the use of force during the encounter. A public report is expected within 30 days.

Outside investigators take the lead

At the sheriff’s office’s request, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the shooting investigation. Frank and Oetken were both treated at the home before being taken to hospitals. A memorial with flowers, photographs, and tributes later formed around Frank’s patrol vehicle in Sioux Falls.

Public details remain limited on what brought deputies to the home, who fired during the confrontation, and how each person was wounded. Those answers sit with the active investigation and the coming use-of-force review.

What is already on the record is plain enough. A young deputy answered a call, gunfire broke out half an hour after arrival, and she did not survive the wounds. The man charged in the case sits without bond on multiple counts tied to violence against law enforcement officers.

When officers step into unknown doorways and hallways so the public does not have to, the least a community can do is name the cost clearly, and refuse to shrug when one of them pays it.
