Marin County authorities identified a retired San Francisco police sergeant as the suspected shooter in a double-murder suicide that killed his wife, a former deputy chief, and their daughter.

Deputies responded to a 911 call around 5 p.m. Sunday at a family home on Strawberry Circle in Mill Valley and found three people dead inside, Fox News reported.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said the preliminary investigation points to a suspected double-murder suicide. Public information officer Miguel Almaguer identified the suspected shooter as male and later named him as Kevin Mannix, 68, a retired San Francisco Police sergeant.

The dead were identified as Ann Mannix, 65, a retired San Francisco deputy police chief; her daughter Katie Mannix, 24; and Kevin Mannix. Another resident of the home escaped and placed the 911 call.

Almaguer spoke at a news briefing and would not discuss evidence found inside the home. Autopsies for all three were scheduled for Tuesday. No motive has been released.

Almaguer stated the core finding in plain terms.

"The preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals,"

he said, adding:

"The suspected shooter is male."

San Francisco police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

SFPOA mourns a trailblazing deputy chief

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, issued a statement Monday after the news broke Sunday evening out of Marin County.

"It is with profound sadness, shock, and heavy hearts that we address the devastating news that emerged out of Marin County on Sunday evening,"

Wong said. He continued:

"The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family reeling. There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking."

Wong described Ann Mannix as the first woman to join and later lead the department’s SWAT team. She backed youth sports and served on the board of the city’s Police Activities League.

Lou Barberini, a former San Francisco police officer and Bay Area columnist who knew the couple, praised her record.

"Ann had a lot of talent, and she was very competent,"

Barberini said. He added that she was a great athlete, a good cop, and well-liked.

What remains unknown

Authorities have not released the weapon type, wound details, or any note. The medical examiner had not issued a final manner-of-death ruling beyond the sheriff’s preliminary account. Absolute calendar dates were not provided in the initial reporting, only the Sunday response, Monday statement, and Tuesday autopsy schedule.

Mill Valley sits in Marin County across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, a coastal Bay Area city known for wealth and quiet residential streets. The deaths happened inside the family’s own home, not on duty.

Three members of one police family are gone. The public still lacks a motive, a full evidence account, and a final official ruling, and none of that absence softens the fact that a retired sergeant is the man authorities named as the shooter.
