Ilhan Omar answered a federal raid on her D.C. home with a five-word warning to President Trump, even as Justice Department officials confirmed a lawful immigration fraud probe.
Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Northeast Washington residence early Monday and carried boxes of materials from the property, the New York Post reported.
Neighbors described loud banging before dawn and a man screaming for the door to open. The Minnesota Democrat, 44, later framed the search as political payback rather than routine enforcement of a multi-year federal case tied to her immigration history.
A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed the action was a judicially authorized warrant secured by DOJ and carried out as part of an ongoing federal investigation. That official account undercuts the claim that agents freelanced a political stunt against a sitting member of Congress.
Fox News reported that HSI agents searched Omar’s D.C. home around 6 a.m. Monday in a criminal fraud investigation focused on immigration paperwork filled out when she entered the United States as a child.
The paperwork at issue was completed by her late father, according to reporting on the probe. Sources familiar with the action have tied the multi-year inquiry to possible false statements on those forms. Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has never been charged with an immigration-related crime.
Still, a judge signed off on the warrant. Agents showed up before most of the neighborhood was awake. Boxes left the house in plain view. That sequence is how federal criminal searches work when investigators believe evidence sits inside a residence, including the home of a lawmaker.
Omar broke her silence on X after the raid. She cast the search as the latest chapter in a long campaign against her.
In a post that closed with her five-word line of defiance, she wrote:
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”
Her communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, went further. Just the News reported Rogers calling the raid an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation, while insisting the congresswoman has done nothing wrong.
Fellow “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib joined the defense online, equating a DHS search of a member of Congress’s home with the methods of a fascist police state. That is the language of crisis politics. It is not a substitute for answering questions about immigration forms.
Breitbart reported the same core confirmation from a DOJ spokesperson, who described a judicially authorized search warrant executed by Homeland Security Investigations in the Washington area as part of an ongoing federal investigation.
The spokesperson’s statement left little room for the “pointless raid” narrative Omar’s office advanced:
“Today in the Washington, DC, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.”
Border Czar Tom Homan had previously said Omar was already the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. That public signal matches the warrant executed Monday and tracks with earlier coverage of an HSI search in the criminal immigration probe.
Omar was born in Somalia and gained U.S. citizenship at 17 in 2000. She is up for reelection on Nov. 3, seeking a fifth House term. None of that biography places her above the same document rules that bind every other applicant or naturalized citizen.
Long before Monday’s search, Trump administration officials had pointed to separate allegations that Omar fraudulently married her brother to help him obtain a green card. She has denied those claims. No immigration-related charge has been filed against her on that theory either.
President Trump has been blunt about the stakes if the underlying allegations prove true, saying a member of Congress who entered the country through such a scheme should not remain in office and should be removed from the country. Officials have also discussed the possibility of denaturalization if false statements on immigration forms are established, a process that would take years and face legal challenge.
Those earlier threads help explain why federal investigators kept digging. They also explain why the DHS inquiry into her immigration history did not vanish when Omar called the scrutiny a smear.
National Review noted that House Democratic leadership labeled the search a deeply disturbing weaponization against a Trump adversary. Omar herself called it intimidation. The warrant paperwork, signed by a judge and executed by HSI, points to a different category of government action: evidence collection in a criminal fraud case.
Rogers told reporters her boss had done nothing wrong and branded the episode a pointless federal raid after a decade of what she called inflammatory rhetoric. The Justice Department’s confirmation of a judicially authorized warrant is the cleaner record. Rhetoric does not open a door at 5 a.m. A signed warrant does.
Omar’s allies want the public to treat any scrutiny of her entry paperwork as an attack on democracy itself. That framing collapses under basic process. Federal agents secured court approval. They executed the warrant. They removed materials for review. That is the system working on a sensitive subject, immigration fraud, not a rogue police state.
Prior reporting has already tracked the gap between Omar’s public denials and officials’ insistence that a criminal case was live, including coverage of how she denied federal contact while Homan confirmed an ICE investigation. Monday’s boxes carried out of a D.C. home fit that longer arc.
Denaturalization, if it ever came, would demand a high proof bar and years of litigation. An ex-prosecutor’s breakdown of citizenship-stripping standards has already sketched how steep that climb is. None of that difficulty freezes investigators in place when they believe false statements may sit in the file.
Omar can post that she will not be silenced. She can call the search intimidation. She can rally colleagues who reach for the heaviest political labels available. What she cannot do is erase a DOJ-confirmed warrant or the multi-year fraud investigation that produced it.
Voters in her district will decide her fifth-term bid in November. Federal investigators will decide what the seized materials show. Those are separate tracks. Only one of them answers to campaign messaging.
A member of Congress who lectures the country on the Constitution does not get a special shield when the question is whether immigration paperwork told the truth. Court-approved searches exist for exactly that kind of accountability.
