Joshua Tree desert search deepens fears in case of missing SNL writer Jimmy Fowlie’s sister

Police searched a Joshua Tree Airbnb with K-9 teams for missing Christina Fowlie Downer, a desert turn that left her SNL-writer brother praying for truth, not rescue.

The Los Angeles Police Department told NBC Los Angeles on Friday that officers scoured an Airbnb property in the California desert town of Joshua Tree in connection with the disappearance of Christina Fowlie Downer, the 38-year-old sister of Saturday Night Live writer Jimmy Fowlie.

K-9 units took part in an extensive search. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department assisted. Investigators from the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division are handling the case. Police did not say whether anything was found and would not confirm they were searching for remains. Officials still describe the matter as a disappearance, and the investigation remains open.

Downer was reported missing in December 2025 after last being heard from in November. The desert sweep marks a stark escalation after months without answers, and after her brother publicly shifted from hope of a safe return to a call for accountability.

Brother’s prayers moved from rescue to accountability

In an April post, Jimmy Fowlie made plain how the family’s outlook had changed.

"Our prayers for her to be found safely have transformed into prayer for the truth to be revealed and for those responsible to be held accountable."

Reporting on the case has described him as believing his sister is dead. That statement sits against a thin official record: no public finding from the Joshua Tree search, no named suspect in the material available, and a case still labeled a disappearance.

Her last known public message came on December 14, 2025. On social media she posted from what was described as her Los Angeles apartment, dressed in a tight red top and looking into the camera.

"Living at peace. If you wanna send me a Christmas treat, I’ll be waiting. Happy holidays, everyone,"

Handles for Cash App and Venmo appeared in her Instagram bio, which had about 700 followers. Friends and family later told the Daily Mail the December 14 post seemed “off,” and that they had not heard from her for weeks before it went up.

Ex-husband’s welfare check found nothing out of place

Ryan Downer, Christina’s ex-husband, phoned authorities for a wellness check in December after weeks of silence. Officers checked her Koreatown apartment. He told the Daily Mail the place was clean and tidy, with nothing out of the ordinary.

He has struggled to square that scene with her vanishing.

"It just doesn’t make any sense why she would leave without telling anyone. That’s not like her. We just want to know what happened because none of it makes any sense."

The pair married in 2015 in Woburn, Massachusetts. Court documents obtained by the Daily Mail show they separated in November 2023, citing “irreconcilable differences,” in what was described as an amicable split.

On-and-off relationship and a prior restraining order

In the period before she disappeared, Downer had an on-and-off relationship with Delorean Bijon Brandon, a local Los Angeles R&B singer. Brandon told the Daily Mail he had nothing to do with her disappearance and said he was concerned for her safety. He also claimed she had trouble getting modeling work, struggled with money, and mixed drugs to cope with stress.

In September 2024, Christina filed a temporary restraining order against Brandon’s ex-girlfriend, saying she had been harassing them for years. Those court details sit in the background of a case police have not publicly resolved.

People who knew her described mental health struggles in recent years. Source accounts also state she had led a double life under the name Chavon Taylor in adult entertainment and exotic dancing, including work at a gentlemen’s club in the Woburn area after she stepped back from that career. None of that personal history has been tied by police, in the available reporting, to a confirmed cause for her disappearance.

What investigators have and have not said

The LAPD has said Downer was reported missing in December 2025 after last contact in November. Robbery-Homicide is investigating. The Friday search in Joshua Tree, backed by San Bernardino County deputies and K-9 teams, is the most concrete field action detailed so far. Police have not disclosed results, have not confirmed a remains search, and continue to treat the file as a missing-person case.

That leaves the family in a hard place familiar to anyone who has watched a loved one’s trail go cold: a clean apartment, a holiday post that felt wrong to people closest to her, a desert Airbnb sweep with dogs, and a brother’s public move from prayers for safety to prayers for truth and consequences.

Open questions remain plain. What, if anything, did the Joshua Tree search turn up? Who last heard from Christina in November, and on what date? Has any person been named a suspect or person of interest? Officials have not answered those points in the reporting at hand.

When a family is left praying for truth and for those responsible to face consequences, the job of police is the same as it always should be: follow the evidence, name what happened, and refuse to let a disappearance become a permanent shrug.
