Suspect in fatal Bronx balcony shove grins as cops lead him away in shackles

Angel Carrasco wore a sinister grin and showed no remorse as officers led him away in shackles after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend and baby off a 15-story Bronx balcony.

The 31-year-old was walked out of a New York City police station in shackles Thursday, smiling at the crowd after U.S. Marshals and NYPD officers nabbed him the night before in the fatal fall that killed 23-year-old Nathaly Rarmirez and left their infant fighting for life.

Law enforcement sources say Carrasco showed up at her apartment with flowers in a bid to patch things up after earlier domestic violence arrests, then flew into a rage, threw Rarmirez and the baby from the balcony, and fled. The attack unfolded around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday at 2550 Olinville Ave. in the Bronx.

The New York Post reported that Rarmirez plunged while clutching 8-month-old Angel Novalty Carrasco-Ramirez. She died. The baby survived the 15-story fall and continues to cling to life at Jacobi Hospital.

Bystanders did not hold back as Carrasco was led out.

People in the crowd shouted at him.

"Coward! Coward!"

Another voice cut through with raw fury.

"I hope they f***ing kill your a** in jail."

Neighbor heard the shouts before the thud

Neighbor Robin Mendzies described the horror she heard from nearby.

"I heard someone shouting, 'Jump!' It was a male voice."

Then came the sound that followed.

"Then I heard a big thud and a woman wailing, 'No, please, no!' It sounded like she was begging for an inevitable thing not to happen."

Carrasco is charged in Rarmirez’s death. He is the child’s father. After the shove, he ran. Marshals and city cops caught up with him Wednesday night.

Flowers first, then the rage

Sources told reporters the flowers were meant to reconcile after prior domestic violence busts. The gesture failed. Investigators say he snapped, hurled Rarmirez and his daughter off the balcony, and took off.

That history was already on the books. In January, Carrasco was twice arrested in domestic violence incidents involving Rarmirez. One set of charges said he broke into her apartment three days after he allegedly slapped her twice when she objected to him chatting up an ex. He had also been arrested before for allegedly sending threatening text messages to another ex.

He was free. She was home with an 8-month-old. The next confrontation ended on the pavement 15 stories down.

A young mother building a life in the city

Rarmirez was 23. She graduated from Bronx Leadership Academy High School, attended Baruch College, and worked at Lishawn Consulting in Manhattan. A representative there called her “a rising star” and “very hardworking.”

She was holding her baby when she went over the rail. The child is still at Jacobi Hospital. Carrasco’s courtroom path is just starting. The grin outside the station said plenty about remorse.

Prior arrests did not keep him away from her door. Flowers did not keep her safe. A young mother is dead, a baby is fighting to live, and the man accused of throwing them off a Bronx balcony smiled on his way out in chains, another brutal reminder that repeat domestic violence does not fix itself and soft second chances can cost lives.
